pretty sure my WRT54G is busted

WRT54G v8, hooked up to dsl modem & windows 7 workstation

serving wifi with WAP-personal to laptop on windows xp



so this combo has worked without a problem for close to a year or something.

then after a long vacation i come back and the laptop had problem auto-connecting to wifi (wired connection no problem). i did quick power cycle (power off/on) of modem and laptop connected again. i noticed that every new session on the laptop (laptop off/on) it would be disconnected from wifi again.

maybe its laptop problem, maybe its wrt54g problem. so i tried to log onto the router.... nothing. router web page wont open up. after if i power cycled the router, i was able to log into it as normal.

so alas, it is the router. i flashed the firmware from January 2008 version to June 2009. same problem again.... after a "new session" on laptop i couldnt connect via wifi, and couldnt log onto router via wired workstation. (havent tested how long after a router power cycle until it goes "dead")


summary:
router maintains functional wired dhcp connection indefinitely. after power-cycle, after some unknown period of time, router wifi capabilities dies (ssid is still broadcasted), and cannot log onto router itself. problem not rectified with new firmware




is this a common issue or should i seek warranty?

I actually have a similar problem with the same router and Windows 7. I'm fairly sure it's not the router because mine is brand new. It happens to me a few times a week, and a power cycle solves the problem. Sometimes I can solve the issue by unplugging my USB wifi dongle, sometimes I need to power down the router.

Running Windows 7 build 7000. I'm hoping upgrading to Windows 7 RC will solve the issue.

try a firmware upgrade. ive seen lots of linksys routers go to crap and a firmware update seemed to sort them out (or, last resort, flash with dd-wrt or something)

I would try flashing it with DD-WRT or Tomatoe( or any other open source firmware) and see if that resolves the issue. Plus, you also get more settings with those firmwares.

Sounds like your laptop lost its setting to automatically connect to saved networks. Might want to check that out in the Wireless Config.

When Flashed with DD-WRT it is a better Router and Wireless than WRT54G (especialy Better than the version 5 and above semi-duds).

well, now its official, ive bricked the whole thing.

ive had DLink thats gone bad.. now this Linksys... Buffalo cannot legally sell routers in the US...so what to try next?
