Previous owners of my home were foreclosed on

Is there any way to put a stop to this?

I've had a tow truck man show up looking to tow a car that belonged to the previous owners, which freaked my wife out. Right when she pulled into our driveway from getting home from work some big "scary looking" (according to her) guy gets out of his tow truck and starts approaching my wife who is all by her self. To her relief he was just looking for the previous owners and once she explained that the previous owners were foreclosed on and we now own the home, he left.

Today a cop showed up about a civil dispute and some court number looking for them also, I explained that the house was bought by us last year and the previous owners were foreclosed on.

We get nonstop collections in the mail for them as well, we probably get more mail for collections for them than we get of our own mail.

Is there any way to put a stop to all of this?

Sounds like something that comes with the territory of owning a previously foreclosed home. I mean, if they are harassing you it's one thing, but if they leave when you tell them that the other people no longer live there it seems to me like it's merely a problem accountable to the previous owners not informing their creditors that they were moving.

You could probably put up a no trespassing sign or post a sign saying that the people no longer live there. You should also contact city hall and ask what steps you should it.

nope, not until your address gets filtered out of all the databases that it is on.

just return the mail with "no longer at this address on the front. its free to do that you know.

give it time. we did the same thing.

it took roughly 2 years before it stoped. we had the same type of stuff. bills, people looking for them. the worst was having the cops come at 3am looking for someone who used to live here.

Phone isn't an issue.

I don't even have a home phone.

It's all the mail and people just showing up at my house that I have the problem with.

Probably nothing you can do but have a lot of patience, notify the companies that you are the new owner and that the old owners are gone.

I put a label in the mailbox that said "John Doe no longer lives here." Our mailman stopped delivering most of his mail.

Our mail person never (sometimes on accident) puts other peoples mail in our box. Sounds like your mail person is an idiot, or lazy, or both. Either way, how are those companies supposed to know they are gone if you are just tossing out the letters? Common sense FTW!

As others have stated, it will take abouit 2 years for everything to filter out.

Notify the Post Office and also the police and court system.

We have had a SWAT team visit due to a similar vehicle that was used in an armed robbery which was traced to our address. visitor has a newly purchased vehicle with temp plates of the same model/color.

With the mail just leave a letter for your mailman explaining the situation and place a label on the inside of your mailbox with the names of people living there. That's what my grandma did and it worked. Good luck. The house I'm buying was foreclosed on but it's been vacant for a couple months. Hopefully I won't have the same problem...

"Is there any way to put a stop to this? "

You bought a forclosed home. In hindsight, should you have expected this? Probably.

If you move and don't notify the USPS, they don't magically know you don't live there any more.

Thats why he should notify the companies sending the letters.
As for the postman, I would think that since the OP has lived in the new house for a year, he would catch on. Some mail people are just idiots and dont care.

I write return to sender on previous owner's mail and return it and it keeps showing up. I've been doing this for months.

I can't legally open it (it's not mine) to get the necessary account information to notify the companies sending the mail. What recourse do I have? Keep returning the mail or just throw it away?

You must keep returning it legally. Destruction or opening of other people's mail is a federal offense.

Nothing else you can do.... Personally, I would find time to speak with the postman, or even call the local post office.
