Our mail person never (sometimes on accident) puts other peoples mail in our box. Sounds like your mail person is an idiot, or lazy, or both. Either way, how are those companies supposed to know they are gone if you are just tossing out the letters? Common sense FTW!

If you move and don't notify the USPS, they don't magically know you don't live there any more.

Thats why he should notify the companies sending the letters.
As for the postman, I would think that since the OP has lived in the new house for a year, he would catch on. Some mail people are just idiots and dont care.

Actually I believe a postal carrier MUST deliver mail to whatever address is listed unless otherwise requested or directed. They can just assume that John Doe doesn't live at your house. For all they know he could be a relative, roommate, or having his mail sent to your house for collection.

With skip tracing you will probably still have been called even if you had moved already.

I have been divorced from my ex-wife for 10+ years, I don't even know where she is but I still get calls on bad debts. I keep a folder of names so as soon as I find her I am letting them all know.

On the flip side of this one day a branch manager of the bank my wife and I used to have joint account at decided to pass all her overdrafts onto my account and then all her autodrafts onto my account once she closed her's.

Happened twice...the manager asked me 'Well who should paid these fees, us?'

Second time she was terminated within one hour of the bank's president recieving a certified letter from my attorney . I was offered free banking for life, but I pulled out of that bank...I was left assed out two times while on business travel.

I write return to sender on previous owner's mail and return it and it keeps showing up. I've been doing this for months.

I can't legally open it (it's not mine) to get the necessary account information to notify the companies sending the mail. What recourse do I have? Keep returning the mail or just throw it away?

Write a letter to the postmaster or go to your local branch to talk to them about it.

Deal with them as you come. It would probably be more trouble to track each and every company/loan shark/repo man down that might be coming than letting them come and telling them they don't live here anymore. For safety, put a note on the front door or mailbox telling them of the situation. Then again, the 'bad' people might not get the point and start taking things without asking...

I was getting calls for a "Shawnie" for about 2 years after getting my cell phone, they seem to have stopped in the last few months.

You bought a forclosed home. In hindsight, should you have expected this? Probably.

I bought a foreclosed home. I don't think we've *ever* received any mail for the previous owners. Of course, maybe in my neck of the woods, the mailmen are smarter. i.e. if they know a house is occupied by new owners, and not the previous owners who the mail is addressed to, they simply don't leave the wrong mail in the mailbox.

Or, maybe it's because the mailmen here are less lazy. One of the two.

Actually I believe a postal carrier MUST deliver mail to whatever address is listed unless otherwise requested or directed. They can just assume that John Doe doesn't live at your house. For all they know he could be a relative, roommate, or having his mail sent to your house for collection

You mean that the mailmen in your area who deliver mail to a house 5 or 6 days a week aren't smart enough to figure out that the house was foreclosed on? They don't notice the big "For Sale" sign and other things that would signal that the previous owners were gone? They don't notice that week's worth of mail is accumulating in the mailbox after the previous owners are booted out? Our mailmen are a bit smarter than that.
