Just a silly question : In the scenario that the gpu driver in general would replace game shaders for optimized versions, how would the driver know that you changed a in game setting ?
How does the game inform the driver that different shaders are used or more shaders are used for example for shadows.
Is there some kind of directx function for that to let the driver know that image quality settings have changed ? Is the driver itself probing the shaders on the fly to see if it needs to use different shaders ?

I noticed that some games when applying graphic changes, need to almost restart the game while other games just change on the fly.
The driver would just use whatever settings its been set to regardless of the game.

I just realized this game is running off CryEngine. For some reason I assumed they were using a Bethesda inhouse engine.

Reading the stuff Bacon1 found, this reminds me exactly of of ArcheAge, which also uses the CryEngine. The issues are almost to a T. I ended up rage quitting due to the shadows and their random behaviors.

Sometimes I'd have to quit the game 5 times for settings to take affect. You can just toss ArcheAge + Shadows into Google and get a boat load of hits.

EDIT:
Some references:
Shadows:

Settings not Saving:
https://www.google.com/search?q=arc...1.69i57j0l5.3663j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

I just installed crysis, and when hitting the tilde to get the console, i noticed the cryengine 2 also notifies in the console that any changes to the graphic settings such as anisotropic settings print a line that mentiones : DUMP_TO_DISK , REQUIRED_APP RESTART. Or something like that.

If the game is using different shaders, it's sending different shaders to the driver. It's that simple.

The driver would just use whatever settings its been set to regardless of the game.

Well, my question was if the driver replaces the game shaders with optimized versions. Is this an urban legend or actually the case ?
I think i will ask this question in the Beyond3D forum instead.

Yeah, nvidia and amd do sometimes modify and rewrite shaders to be more optimal for their hardware.

Aha. Thank you.
The thing is, if you change a setting in the game and the driver only replaces shaders at the start of the game when it is executed and because the game does not alter its settings until a restart. Then the driver is not to blame.
The game should notify the user instead that the game needs to restart or be restarted. Some games do that.

Those missing shadows and lighting look to be about a 30%-40% performance hit on a 1080 Ti.

Wasn't it just an issue with settings not applying until the game relaunched anyway? I mean, the difference with higher shadow quality isn't part of the update, just a setting that was there already.

hope it's not blurry as hell like most recent games.

Reshade has become mandatory now with all that blur fest. Games are power hogs and don't look good nowadays.

I think it lets you use a few different temporal SMAA versions, which aren't as effective as more recent temporal AAs, but usually a bit less blurry.

I'm not seeing any difference in either shadows or anything, the one exclusion is in the helicopter which the new patch seem to use a bit higher texture detail, but other than that its pretty much same, yet its almost 30% slower.

Either the benchmarker is erroneous and has screwed up his settings, or the game is shit performance wise after the patch!

From the 4k screen shots and ingame footage this looks like a 2013 game to me. I'm shocked to learn it is built with cryengine and
have to wonder why it looks so bad. I know Bethesda prioritise story telling over graphical fidelity but the performance numbers are what I'd expect
from what looks like a lazy console port.

The quality of the reflections (due to higher quality lighting I assume) is really obvious once you get dialed into what to look for.

Isn't the game running really well on modest hardware though?
Maybe that's why it's not visually cutting edge. They probably want it to run well on most people's PCs. I can't fault them for that. The game doesn't look bad anyway, just not amazing.

Looks like everybody lost performance with new patch, but only Fury stays the same?

I actually didn't notice any performance difference in 1440p pre patch and after on Fury. I wish I tested more carefully, but the game was working smooth vsynced 60 fps 1440p anyway.

Makes sense. Seems one of the features of the patch was to activate reflections which seemed to be off at launch.

Not sure if CDKeys is as bad, but G2A and many others are CD Keys paid for with stolen CC's which are often charged back thus costing the developers money due to fees. So instead of giving them money, you are actually costing them money.

G2A: *opens long beige overcoat* Hey kid, over hear
Guy: Where did you get all those keys for cheap
G2A: Don't worry about it, they are totally legit
Guy: *shrugs* Good enough for me!
G2A: Cool. Here you go bro. Don't forget my $3.50 every month
Guy: What?
G2A:*zips up and starts to book it* Tree fiddy, guy. We had a deal

Ok I don't wanna be that guy defending G2A but I have bought from them a few times for smurf accounts for Rainbow Six Siege via Paypal without issue. CD Key resale is definitely a shady market with some bad practices going on. It is incredibly hard to enforce and G2A definitely doesn't want the money train to end.

This isn't anything new and G2A is a far friendlier source than what I am used to dealing with... Is it ethical? NOPE. Prey is only $37 on G2A
