I use that HSF too, it's very nice, very quiet.

Hope so. I just started playing STALKER so I'm looking forward to the performance upgrade.

Because lots of Anandtecher's are buy up stock!

I can't remember who said it, but they were thinking Newegg has an algorithm to automatically increase prices for products whose sales increase. Makes sense to me, wish I'd come up with that idea.

So close to pulling the trigger on this one, but can't confirm that it will actually work on my mobo. The problem is I can't find evidence that MSI has updated the BIOS for my mobo to use the X2 chips. I have the MSI K8N Neo4/SLI (MS-7100-030) and the latest BIOS update on MSI's website is from 2005!

I called MSI and spoke to a tech, and while he said it *should* work, he wasn't exactly convincing. Anyone out there using a 939 X2 on this board?

Here is my motherboard:

Thanks,
Hoss

MSI designed the K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI motherboard around NVIDIA's popular nForce4 SLI chipset, which supports AMD's Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 FX socket-939 processors. Support for the new Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor and Sempron were added in recent BIOS updates.

From here:
http://www.nvnews.net/reviews/msi_geforce_nx7800gtx_sli/index.shtml

Read a little and you'll find the link to MSI where you can get the bios.

Version 3.3 added support for K8 Dual-cores.

Many are using X2 chips in the Geeks MSI-7125 board. I'm using a Opteron 165 dual core in it. Should work on the SLI version

Whew. I'm planning on putting the X2 in the Geeks MSI mobo, so good to know.

I'm hoping that this will work with the EPoX 9NPA+Ultra? The Epox site isnt working....

This would be a killer upgrade for my Venice 3200+ since I just got a second GB of ram!

Received my chip today, awesome service from Newegg since I ordered on Tuesday. Forgot to get the stepping info before pluggin her in, but with the vcore at 1.45, I am stable at 2.55GHz. Not to bad for some quick overclocking, don't want to push the vcore higher and am not looking to push the chip to the extreme.

Thanks beasty, now I am down to the final question. I have the stock HS/fan for the 3200+ Venice and have never had temp problems. I soooo don't want to yank out the mobo to install a new mount. Any issues with using this HS/fan?

Thanks,
Hoss

For now I just want something to get me through a couple more years.

Personally, regardless of whether or not your apps natively support multiple cores, I think the dual core option is the best. It's going to offer faster load times, faster boot times, more responsiveness, and just an overall better experience. If you're running either XP Pro or Vista Business or above, there's no reason not to make the jump to a multi-core CPU. Buying a single core processor at this point makes absolutely no sense IMO.

That's what I'm planning to do. I have a 3500+ so I imagine it's the same stock HS/fan you have. I figure if temps are an issue I can always order an Arctic Freezer 64 later, if need be. Or maybe CompUSA will have something on closeout. But I figure it's worth a try with the stock one first.

I should also note that I'm not an extreme overclocker -- 10% - 20% is good enough for me, especially if it means not having to raise the vcore much. The more extreme the OC, the more heat becomes an issue (especially when you start upping the volts).

At any rate, my x2 is scheduled for delivery tomorrow, so I'll report back then.

Same here... I'll update with my results. I plan on using the heatsink that I am currently using on my AMD 64 3500+ @ 1.55 volts.

XP Home Edition/Viast Basic supports multiple cores, just not multiple CPUs.

I'm using the 4 pipe AMD cooler on my chip, putting more volts in than I did with my Opty 144, and the X2 seems to idle a few degrees cooler. I know they say the extra cache creates more heat, could also be that the HSF got a nice cleaning while replacing the processor.

Ordered yesterday...arrived today. Wow.

As an aside, the Arctic Freezer 64 Pro is HUGE! I'm not an OC'er but I guess I have no excuse not to do some OC'ing with this sucker on there....

I'm doing the same thing as you folks, I'll be using the h/s fan on the 3200+ that is in my system now. My chip gets here tomorrow...yay. I think the temps will be a tad higher (my 3200 idles at 32 and under load is low 40s) but I don't care because I can't overclock.

Just hit the submit order button at NewEgg. Please let me know if you run into any snags and how you dealt with 'em. Thanks for all the help.

I think you'll find about 9/10 of these CPUs will do 2.5Ghz out of the box with just a bump to 250 for the FSB. If you can tweak up the voltage to 1.5 or more without it getting too hot, you can probably get it up closer to 2.8-3Ghz. The ASrock board I'm using seems to max out at 1.4v in the bios, so I haven't pushed it any higher than 2.5GHz, which really is plenty for this CPU, a 25% OC out of the box, no complaints.

Received mine yesterday, updated my Asus A8V to the 1017 bios, but because of #$%!! work I won't be able to install it till the weekend. My markings are the same as yours except the last line (Y974269K61032). Anyone know where to go to interpret these? Not that it is important, but it gives me something to obsess about till I can install this puppy !
