Yes, it's definitely the fan. I've taken it all apart several times, but I can't find anything to quiet it down. The sound is worse if you put it on a metal object (like your case), where the vibrations are amplified.

Still, the performance doesn't seem to be affected. This thing is incredibly fast.

Anyone know if a fan is really necessary for a single hard drive? Or maybe it's cause it's all enclosed that it requires the fan? Just thinking out loud about simply disconnecting the fan...

Thought?

i was also having the same problem as metalmania:
Windows was unable to save all the data for the file \Device\Harddisk\Volume7\$Mft.The data has been lost.
This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere".
Then I lost the drive letter in the Windows Explorer.
I had to power off this baby and power on again. The drive reappeared. This problem is occured randomly.
anyone else have this experience or know how to fix it?

brock, finally I surrendered. Now I only copy files to 1394 HD, if I run some applications like Nandub, I will NOT set the destination as the 1394 HD. This HD is strictly treated as a source partition.

In this way, I never have any problem yet.

I have the previous version (firewire/usb 1.1). I have even captured Dv with Ulead video studio 5. It worked flawlesly.

The previous version has the oxford 911 as the ide/firewire chipset.

Okay, anyone out there using this enclosure with a usb 2.0 port? I've got an adaptec2connect usb 2.0 card that works fine with other devices but get a blue screen when I attempt to plug my enclosure with a maxtor 160gb drive in. The enclosure works fine with my usb 1.1 port but again, this defeats the purpose of buying this unit if i'm confine to the usb 1.1.

Any thoughts.

brock,

I have the same problem with my firewire port. Both USB 2.0 and 1.1 not work. What a crap product and lousy fans! Btw, I set the jumper to master, does it matter?

The fan is the noisest I've ever seen! It's louder than some buzzers that size, and vibrates like mad. It has a ceramic shaft, which is supposed to be some kind of bonus, but sucks. I thought mine was defective. I ended up pulling the fan out altogether.. I don't run the drive long enough to get really hot, since it's just for mobile transfers and stuff.

As for the Windows error, it seems to be a quirk in Window's poor handling of removable hard drives. It seems to happen when you power the drive down or disconnect it without using the little "Stop" widget in the taskbar. The wonderful error message is annoyingly persistent, and comes up any time you plug the drive in after that, or try to shut down, or whatever.

THE FIX: Go under Computer Management -> Drive Management. Pretend like you're going to change the drive letter (Change Path/Drive letter), and click OK. That seems to make it forget the failed write. It does the trick here, anyway.

For the low price and cheap firewire performance, I can't complain.

It's now available for $52, down $5 from last week.

I just set mine up with a 40GB Samsung HDD on my WinXP machine. The drive works as expected on my USB 1.1 ports, but crashes the computer instantly upon connection with my USB 2.0 card. It doesn't matter if I connect the cable and then turn on the power, or vice-versa. I immediately hear my main internal hard drive turn off, then a second later the computer is rebooting. I'm using the USB 2.0 card from newegg. Link

Can anyone offer their advice?
Thank you for your help.

I think the problem is the USB 2.0 card itself. I installed that piece of junk in my relatives comp. Both XP and w2k kept crashing like crazy all the time. No matter how I installed the card, there was always and unkonwn USB device in the device manager. Removed the card, system is rock solid.

Guess what? My Maxtor in this 3.5" combo case began bad behaviors. Sometimes I turn on the power button, the HD will run a few minutes then my dell will not recongnize it through the 1394 port.

Besides, I found in the HD property that there was no "Write cache" option. I don't know if this is a problem, but I just could not put up with the random lock-down. So I took out the Maxtor, and took the CDRW out of

my 5.25" external case, unplugged the short cable, replaced with a long HD cabe and mounted the Maxtor in that 5.25" case.

Amazingly, everything is so good. No more power problem, no more lock-down, and there is a "write cache" option in the HD property.

I am happy now. I cannot find that post about the 5.25" 1394 enclosure, but I am sure the HD will be better in this 5.25" case.

(3.5" : Ti Chipset, power brick 12V/1.5A
5.25": Oxford 911 chipset, power 12V/2.0A).

I just purchased this external case form this company. It will hold a hard drive OR CD/DVD Drive. It is $59 shipped. They seem like a good company and I received it very fast.

HERE it is

I think that one is different. Mine has the firewire interface, whereas that one is USB 2. I'm not sure which one is better, but that seems to be a very good price. I just got mine hooked up and it works great. Not too loud and it is super fast.

Yeah I realized that after my post. I just ordered it, but I've already got a USB 2.0 card installed (no Firewire) so it works for me. This should work for the new Cendyne 32x burner I just picked up.

Actually, in terms of speed, I think the two are comparable.. I guess it just depends on what type of PCI adapter you have. Does anyone out there know which one is better: firewire or USB 2??

Regardless, mine is working great. I hooked my spare hard drive up to it, and it recognized it fine as a seperate drive. Took 5 minutes to install.

Look this deal!! You will find better prices!!

Yeah, but all I see are USB 2.0... This deal is for a USB2.0/Firewire combos.

Well personally USB2 is all that I'm looking for and that looks like a good deal. $49 for a 3.5/5.25 enclosure that does USB 2 and USB 1.1 seems good to me. I'll probably order tomorrow.

Anyone order from this company before?
