Great deal. I ordered one of these yesterday before the price drop. Fortunately it hadn't shipped yet and I cancelled it and re-ordered it.

I ordered mine 3 days ago, but it did ship. I call 'em up, guy says they can't credit me since it had already shipped, though I can return it and order again if I want. That just sounded screwy, so I email amazon stating what I wanted to happen. Funny enough, one of their reps writes back apologizing and put in a request to credit me the difference.

Hmmm.

Have you tried all the regulars: clearing cache, deleting cookies to make sure you aren't seeing an old page?

If you are using this for your own use why worry about reselling it.

Granted that it has only a single port. However you can hook that single Ethernet port into a hub or switch and
connect that way.

WORD of WARNING.

Is your network secure? If not then be careful while using this. In all likelihood you will be using it in unencrypted
mode (don't ask) and so you will be basically exposed to everyone and anyone wandering by. It is called
"war driving".

I will probably pick up one of these myself. I intend to put it outside my firewall and let it talk to a sacrificial machine outside my firewall. I can then talk to that machine through my firewall. A lot of experimenting to do. I don't really
need it, however I can justify it for networking. Besides it will be neat sitting in my back yard talking to the Internet
without having to drag a long Ethernet cable outside.

All I can say is to be careful if you are using it. Don't say that you weren't warned. Treat it like it is inherently
unsafe and take it from there.

Ok. You've got my curiosity going. Why is this? Is it because the encryption doesn't work? Is it because the encryption is too slow? Is it because most of us won't know how to enable the encryption?

Also, is your reason a specific problem of the DI-711 or is it a common problem among all wireless gateways?

Thanks.

For those of you that are getting the higher price on the router try logging out of Amazon,
so your preferences are NOT showing.
Amazon is known to charge higher prices on some items with your preferences enabled.
Clear all your temp internet files and make sure you are not getting the welcome greeting.
If possible do a search on a PC that you have not ordered from them before.
You might have to remove the cookie from your pc to get the right price, I don't know the internal workings of it exactly but
this is a practice that they DO USE.

Cookies did the trick, those bastards, anyway having installed a half dozen different brands of wireless stuff yah Dlink is the bottom of the barrell but for this price I would even go for it except for the baby on the way syndrome

If you need more than one port, you are better off spending a little more and buying a wireless router w/ multiple ports. Microcenter has an SMC 3-port router for $100 + shipping after $50 MIR. 802.11b equipment will continue to drop in price, just like the wired routers/NICs have.

Can i use this as a bridge. I already have a wireless router in my house. Instead of buying a separate wireless card for each of my other machines (in another room), can i install this in the 2nd room and get the other machines to use it as a bridge to connect to the 1st router (belkin). This would be cheaper than buying a card for each of them.

Think I'm gonna setup my network something similar to this:

(inet)----(69.69.69.69-router 1-192.168.1.1)----(Wireless LAN-192.168.1.0/24)----(192.168.1.2-router 2-192.168.2.1)----(hardwired LAN-192.168.2.0/24)

Should be fairly secure I think...

Whoo hoo... Finally a golden member

Got two, minus the 10 dollar coupon and almost 10 bucks for shipping (free shipping option) the total is about $130. Minus the $20 rebate plus the $100-$120 I can likely get for one of them on Ebay I will keep one of them for free.

i gots a n00bie question..

my home setup now is:

Host computer running Win2k with 2 nics
1st nic -> cable modem
2nd nic -> 5 port hub

Client computer then connects to hub, internet connection established through ICS (DHCP).

So if I get this wireless router, where would I connect it?

1. Take it Off-Topic or Networking
2. Turn on your PMs so someone can answer you
3. From the cable modem --> router --> from router to hub (uplink or use crossover) --> hub ---> to computers!

And now you pull out the extra NIC and disable the stupid MS ICS! (good riddance!)

I'm new to wireless networking....

Can this be used as an access point, or will it just allow internet connections to shared. I want to set up a 3 computer wireless LAN to share cable modem access, share files, etc.

bit, thanks for the tip on the Belkin wireless notebook card!

I picked up the D-Link DI-711 Broadband 802.11B Wireless Router, Belkin F5D6020 Wireless Notebook Network Card, and the MS Wheel Mouse Optical for $126 after the $10 off $75 coupon. After $20 MIR on the Wireless Router and $10 MIR on the mouse, it'll be about $96 for all three, and I saved around $9 on shipping because my price was over $99!

Thanks!

Hork
