Lost my Maha charger recently when I went on vacation.

Went ahead and got one of these. Sounds like I won't be disappointed.

I'm really loving what I see in this charger. Looks like the one I will spend the money on.

I wish though that someone had a schematic for something like this. (No. Not This EXACTLY.)

It would be great to build a really good charger and be able to add your own mods to it. I'm sure that if the 110vac inputs were bypassed, 12vdc would work in a car. With C and D size battery holders, this would be great for those whoe not only want C or D size buy don't want to use the C or D size adapters and would choose to spend the money on C or D size NIMH.

Maybe I'm just a geek....

Thanks, though! I'm in for 1!

I ended up getting a charger and batteries combo from batteryspace.com (which I believe used to be byd-usa.com, for those who remember that site). The AA batteries are 2300 mAh, which are quite nice for digital cameras and my MP3 player, but what I really bought this for was the 10,000-mAh D cell batteries for my infant son's swing. Kids? toys chew through batteries like they?re candy, and it was getting really old having to run down the street to Target or Big Lots to pick up a cheap four-pack of D cell batteries. It really sucks when the batteries run out while he's sleeping in it and it stops rocking, which usually wakes him up, so I was hoping this would be a good solution. I have no idea what the mAh rating of the cheap Eveready D cells is, but these rechargeable D cells outlast them by a considerable margin.

The biggest drawback about the D cell batteries is that they take a really long time to charge. The documentation that comes with the charger indicates that 9,500 mAh D cell batteries should take about 14.5 hours to charge, so I guessed that 15 or 16 hours ought to be sufficient for the 10,000-mAh D cell batteries. It sometimes takes longer than that, though, so maybe the charging time isn?t completely linear. The AA batteries charge fully in a little more than an hour, as expected. One minor oddity with the AA and AAA batteries is that they are a very snug fit in the old Rayovac charger that I have, but there doesn?t seem to be any problem charging them once you get them in the slots. I know that the old Rayovac charger isn?t as good as these microprocessor-controlled chargers are, but if I?m in the middle of charging a set of D cell batteries, it?s nice to be able to have a backup. Also, AAA batteries are a little tricky to charge in this charger because of the way the batteries are held in place while they?re charging. There?s a large metal hook that retracts back against a spring, and the spring pushing on the hook holds the batteries in place. The little AAA batteries are so small that it?s hard to get them lined up correctly so that they won?t fall out. There?s probably a trick to it, but if there is, I haven?t figured it out yet. I don?t really care too much, because I bought this charger for the monster C and D cell batteries, and I probably would have bought it anyway even if that were all it was meant to charge.

I think the charger I got might be defective, though, as whichever battery I put in the second inevitably stops charging before it's done (the red charging light goes out instead of turning green to indicate that it finished). If I switch the battery to a different slot, it works fine, so I don't think it's the batteries. Also, one of the 9V battery slots is so tight that I can?t get a battery plugged into it. I'm going to do an RMA with them and hope it's just a fluke. I've ordered batteries from them before with good results, so I hope this goes as well. It?s a really good deal for the price (assuming that the replacement charger works as expected), and there are usually coupon codes floating around for a 5% discount (which isn?t much, but their non-discounted prices are already pretty competitive).

SirPsycho,

I use rechargeables for my kid's swing, too. Or I recently used to (they grow up quick). Since all the C & D rechargeables in the stores were around the same cap as good AAs (~2300 mAH), I just used AAs with adapters. Judging by the weight, that's all the store-brand C & D rechargeables are anyway. Not like the 10k maH Ds you linked above. The AAs worked fine in the kids swing. I have to recharge more often, but the batteries and chargers are cheap and I have all the advantages of standardization on AAs. Also, it's a lot easier to travel with 1 or 2 AA travel chargers than a big D-sized charger.

I got this charger to start testing and reconditioning some of my older AA batteries. It will be nice to write the tested capacities on each battery and pair them accordingly.

Most of my kids' battery needs are more toward AAs than Ds as they grow up, but that 10k maH D looks tempting. I keep thinking of adding a Luxeon Star conversion to my D-sized Maglight.

I wonder what new and much neater chargers came out at last weeks CES show?

RE what the difference in cheap and good chargers?

Fully charging the battery without damage, and reconditioning old batteries.

I have the exact same charger that you are talking about. Well, one day after I had it for over a year, it started to smoke! And that isn't a cheap charger either. Well. guessing that charging batteries isn't worth burning the house down, I decided to get an Ansmann Energy 8. Seeing that yours is defective, and mine started to burn, leads me to believe the quality control on these Chinese chargers is lacking. The Ansmann is more than twice as heavy also, and has a cord with no adapter, and is made in Germany.

Is that charger the same as this one: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=47620

That's $19 @ Harbor Freight

Yes it is, and I paid more than twice that amount. Scared the hell out of me when it started smoking. I am just glad that I was sitting there and saw it. I tried to take it apart to see what was wrong, but it has a weird kind of screw holding it together that I don't have a bit for. I have seen battery chargers that have instructions that say not to leave these things charging "unattended." Now I know what they mean, but who can do that?

I think the deadline or whatever is 30 days since purchase. You just call em and ask for a price adjustment.
