The AA batteries are 2300 mAh, which are quite nice for digital cameras and my MP3 player, but what I really bought this for was the 10,000-mAh D cell batteries for my infant son's swing. Kids? toys chew through batteries like they?re candy, and it was getting really old having to run down the street to Target or Big Lots to pick up a cheap four-pack of D cell batteries. It really sucks when the batteries run out while he's sleeping in it and it stops rocking, which usually wakes him up, so I was hoping this would be a good solution. I have no idea what the mAh rating of the cheap Eveready D cells is, but these rechargeable D cells outlast them by a considerable margin.
The biggest drawback about the D cell batteries is that they take a really long time to charge. The documentation that comes with the charger indicates that 9,500 mAh D cell batteries should take about 14.5 hours to charge, so I guessed that 15 or 16 hours ought to be sufficient for the 10,000-mAh D cell batteries. It sometimes takes longer than that, though, so maybe the charging time isn?t completely linear. The AA batteries charge fully in a little more than an hour, as expected. One minor oddity with the AA and AAA batteries is that they are a very snug fit in the old Rayovac charger that I have, but there doesn?t seem to be any problem charging them once you get them in the slots. I know that the old Rayovac charger isn?t as good as these microprocessor-controlled chargers are, but if I?m in the middle of charging a set of D cell batteries, it?s nice to be able to have a backup. Also, AAA batteries are a little tricky to charge in this charger because of the way the batteries are held in place while they?re charging. There?s a large metal hook that retracts back against a spring, and the spring pushing on the hook holds the batteries in place. The little AAA batteries are so small that it?s hard to get them lined up correctly so that they won?t fall out. There?s probably a trick to it, but if there is, I haven?t figured it out yet. I don?t really care too much, because I bought this charger for the monster C and D cell batteries, and I probably would have bought it anyway even if that were all it was meant to charge.
I think the charger I got might be defective, though, as whichever battery I put in the second inevitably stops charging before it's done (the red charging light goes out instead of turning green to indicate that it finished). If I switch the battery to a different slot, it works fine, so I don't think it's the batteries. Also, one of the 9V battery slots is so tight that I can?t get a battery plugged into it. I'm going to do an RMA with them and hope it's just a fluke. I've ordered batteries from them before with good results, so I hope this goes as well. It?s a really good deal for the price (assuming that the replacement charger works as expected), and there are usually coupon codes floating around for a 5% discount (which isn?t much, but their non-discounted prices are already pretty competitive).
