The inbuilt WinXP driver for this card does not support XP's wireless zero config. You can utilize this feature by updating to the new NDIS5.1 driver 4.0.4.1 from the 3Com website, also called CD2.03a. I believe the download package comes with a new firmware too.
Zero config (WinXP only) means you can specify ESSID, security and encryption method, etc, all from the Network Connection Properties Wireless Configuration tab and traybar network icon without needing any special software or having to go into Device Manager Hardware to specify an ESSID. If a wireless card driver does not support zero config, its Wireless Configuration tab will be missing and the traybar network icon wireless features will be greyed out. I believe most of today's card have zero config supported.
I've tried all three Cisco 350 Aironet, Lucent/Agere Orinoco Silver and 3Com 3CRWE62092A. They all work the same, I can't tell any difference in them in terms of performance. The bad part is I've had one Cisco card that kept enumerating as PCMCIA_unknown_manufacturer, one Lucent that keeps hanging the system, and one 3Com that gives me a Device Manager Code 10 (Device could not start). Be sure to return these bad cards for a replacement if you ever get one
