price for replacing a laptop mobo/cpu

I'm looking for a laptop, and one of my friends offered to give me her old one that she busted. It's a Gateway solo 3350 (don't know any other specs as of yet) that she spilled tea on. she took it in and the guys said that she fried the mobo and cpu. I was wondering what the ballpark figures would be for replacing this myself. Sorry about not knowing the cpu speed, but my guess is it's between 500 and 700. I also got an IBM 500Mhz laptop for about $600 on ebay. Should I keep the gateway and resell the IBM, or vice versa (or just have two laptops, and keep a linux machine floating around...on my college budget). I really don't know how the gateways compare to IBM's. Thanks!

Laptop motherboards are kinda hard to replace, and probably can't be done by the standard end-user (heaven knows I couldn't do it). Unlike desktop motherboards, you can't buy laptop motherboards off-the-shelf, because each laptop has a different configuration.

My recommendation is get the IBM. They, in my opinion, make better systems and generally have better support. You'll thank yourself for getting a new laptop.

I had an IBM Thinkpad that required a motherboard replacement. Cost was $750. Fortunately it was still under warranty.

If your motherboard and CPU are fried then you might as well forget about repair it....it's not worth it. I had a Compaq that needed the same repairs and Compaq wanted $1100. which was about the cost of a newer and faster laptop.
