Price gouging

I have been listening to the radio tonight, and many gas stations can face fines, as well as station owners can face jail time if they continue to raise prices due to this attack. The FBI will investigate those who are price gouging. The GBI has said that they will not tolerate it at all. this applies to Hotels, resturants, gas stations, etc. So if you think that a business is price gouging, call the local authorities.

Always on the lookout for Trolls, even if it is not here.

I can't believe this. I work at a local gas station here and we just sold $5000 worth of gas in a 5 hours shift. On a normal day we sell less than $700.
We only have 4 pumps total and we had lines for blocks in a town of only 4000 people,with 8 gas stations, our's being the smallest. In a city 30 minutes away the gas prices were $4/gallon.
My boss refused to raise our price until we got a direct memo from Phillips (our gas supplier). As of right now our price is $1.69, until at least tomorrow morning.
BTW, I'm in the southwest corner of Minnesota.

Last week prices were at $1.93/gal for regular. Today it was at $2.03/gal. The attendant said that they are looking at raising it to at least $4.00/gal for next week when the new tanker arrives. We get all our stuff from Australia.

Made a special trip and filled up in Berkeley, CA. Still ~$1.80 (which is not bad for around here). Asked the guy if the price rumors are true and said I was smart for filling up today.

CNN has some OPEC guy on the phone, they said that in Asian trading a barrel of gas is now going for $30-$32 per barrel compared to a regular $24.

Is that significantly bad or just a small increase?

RossMAN, I just heard that too. That is a very significant increase in price, especially considering the fact that it's a wholesale price, which is very sensitive to even the slightest increase. We, the consumers, will feel the effect of the price increase for several months to come.

That is a huge jump... That is about where oil was during the Gulf War...

Here in Dallas, I've just been to 6 gas stations, ALL OUT OF GAS. They have had people in there all day long, and they have totally run out of gas, no kidding...

There are a few stations here that have gas, I've seen as high as $3.50 a gallon from those that still have some left... That is freaky...

I talked to the manager in one of the stores that had no gas, he said that trucks were running ASAP to bring more, they understood that having no gas looks REALLY bad to the consumer, and it is in their best interest to get gas even if they lose money on it... (this was from a station that had not raised their prices...)

Perhaps the markets people are expecting a war... I'm saddened to think they may be right...

Thanks guys I never knew a $6 per barrel increase would impact us so heavily. If gas is trading at such high rates the local gas stations which are mostly independent or corporate have no choice but to raise rates, right? After all they're buying at higher prices and they shouldn't have to take the loss.

It doesn't affect it THAT much... That is more supply and demand... Everyone in America went out and filled up their gas tanks today, all at the same time.

The current gas station designs are not meant to handle that, so they started running out. As that happened, the prices went up.

That being said, don't be surprised to see steady gas prices of $2 to $2.50 a gallon over the next few weeks... Assuming oil stays at $30+ a barrel and we start dropping bombs some place...
