Price hike on the 8800s?

I was just looking at the AT main homepage, and I glanced at the Anand's Picks sidebar, where it recommends the PNY 8800 GTS 320MB. It's selling for $300+ at the vendors listed. When I got that exact same card (same brand) months ago, it was $269 without any sort of rebate.

How is it that the price is actually increasing? I'm not sure who to blame more. AMD-ATi? Or Nvidia for taking advantage of the situation to line their pockets? Or are there actual legitimate reasons (GDDR price increases for example)?

many sites adjust their prices based upon demand. that gpu is obviously selling very well, so it's risen in price. there are other 8800 gts 320 mb cards for 250-260 these days. and yes, it is ati's fault for putting out crappy cards that are overpriced/uncompetitve and not offering a mid-range unit.

I love it when people try to blame the pricing of one company's products on their competitor. If you're going to do that, why not also blame it on Matrox, S3, 3dfx, Intel and any other company that has ever produced a GPU at any time in the past. I mean, if they hadn't gone out of business or quit making GPUs, then we'd have even MORE competition today and lower prices.

This sort of thinking is just plain WRONG.

It is entirely up to Nvidia to set their own MSRP. No other company can do it for them. Yes, they could feel PRESSURED to lower their prices by a competitor's product, but nobody can actually force them to do it. It has to be entirely their decision.

AT's picks are, like, the worst deals of all time. Stick to NewEgg or the Hot Deals forum.

Jep. That's one of the things that sucks about the video card market--it's a two-company oligopoly (kinda like the processor market).

I'm still blaming 3dfx for something 10 years later.

Creig:

You can blame all of them, but none of them are trying to reach the enthusiast market and none of them have tried to put up a fight in this cycle as ATI has.

Nvidia can set MSRP, but mind you that the MSRP is a suggestion. The retailers will try to get as much profit as possible. And they do it based on the competition. All the retailers feel from Nvidia is the price that they are charged, and Nvidia does it because THEY DON'T HAVE COMPETITION.

Agree with this, but have NVidia actually raised MSRP? I'm not aware of it.

These price fluctuations and hot/not-so-hot deals are at the board partner or retailer level. More competition is also needed at this level.

Not really sure if it is Nvidia or retailers that have raised the price listed here or in general. After months of seeing the 2900XT and 2600, it seems that Nvidia and/or retailers can raise the price of the 8800GTS 320 as it fits nice in between them.

i have question. if newegg sells a card for say.... 500 and tigerdirect sells it for 600.
does nvidia get anymore profit from newegg's sale than tigerdirect's ?

^ I seriously doubt it. It's just like anything else - Tiger buys from Nvidia, Nvidia gets their cut. Tiger resells and makes $X profit.

Way to revive my thread guys .

I revisited the price list on the PNY GTS, and I still think the vendors are overcharging. Newegg is probably the most reasonable out of the bunch, with $279 not inc. shipping (still slightly more than what I paid for at the Egg, months ago, and I also got free shipping on it back then). The rest of the vendors are just flat-out price-gouging, wanting $300-$430 for that card. Way too much for a stock speed, reference-model-based GTS that's been out for months, if you ask me.

Someone needs to light a fire under ATi and tell them to get their act together. If they can't be performance-competitive, at least drop the MSRP so they can be price-competitive, like the AMD side.
