I see that the price of 8 GB sticks is really high now. Do you think that the price of RAM will decrease?

I need to buy 800 GB of RAM within the next 6 months, and at the moment it's just too expensive...

Really high? 8GB of RAM are going for $20 USD :|

He said 8 GB sticks. Try $110 for the cheapest 8GB DIMM on newegg. I suspect they will go down, but it may not reach cost per GB levels of 4GB sticks. It may remain a niche/enthusiast product.

8GB sticks will come down in price. Nobody knows how much, but they are kind of their own thing compared to the larger commodity RAM market (4GB sticks and below).

8GB sticks are newer tech and are not oversupplied like the rest of the RAM market.

However, memory makers have scaled WAY back on production of commodity RAM sizes to push those prices up. Reports are that they won't be able to move the market upwards until ~Q2 2012, but they might be using the 8GB demand to subsidize the low oversupply prices in the more commodity capacities. The long answer is that it probably 8GB stick prices will decrease, but the decrease will likely be pretty slow, as that's the only place the MFRs have any real margin right now.

+1

RAM manufactures are getting basically nothing for the 4GB sticks, only making money on the 8GB ones as it is newer and the demand is their / less supply. Not expecting them to drop noticably until 16GB stick come out (no idea when).

8 GB DDR3 DIMMs may decrease over time, but like others said, the supply and demand for 8 GB single DIMMs aren't nearly as great as the 2/4 GB DDR3 DIMMs. It'll probably be similar to the situation with the 4 GB DDR2 single DIMMs, where price remained high even though 2 GB DDR2 DIMMs were selling at bargain prices.

Liu - We're talking about 8 GB Single DDR3 DIMMs, not 2 x 4 GB DDR3 DIMM kits.

That's like saying you can buy four 10' ladders for the price of one 20' ladder.
10' ladders are just fine if you only need to reach 10'.
But if you need a 20' capacity it doesn't really matter what 10' ladders are selling for.

The OP needs 100 8GB DIMMs, not 200 4GB sticks. He was quite clear on that point.

I can make a 20' Ladder out of 3 10' Ladders ()

-on topic-

Double-take on someone saying that Ram is expensive... I guess 8GB sticks can be expensive!

With 8 x DIMM Slots Mobos just launched, there will be some time untill 8G DIMMs get low to $40 (4G are $20 ATM).
Not much demand for 64GB RAM on desktop systems these days.

it's 4 x 2 GB. It's worthless to me.

Really? in the quotes I got ECC and Buffered ram was more expensive.

If I could I would go for ECC buffered, but as expensive as it is now, I can't afford it.

orly.... maybe i've just been looking at 8GB DIMMs at the wrong times, or not looking at quotes for 50x8GB DIMMs, but so far from me looking @ newegg

~$100/8GB DIMM desktop (~150+ for a branded version)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820144546

~$85/8GB DIMM ECC Registered
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820161381
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820139378

not usre about prices for fully buffered ECC

for me, it makes sense since most desktop users won't need 8GB DIMMS, but servers would need 8GB DIMMs, and most server mobos use ECC/registered ram... so more demand/supply for ECC ram = cheaper
