but i have to ask, how big of a monitor do you have and what resolution do you run? cause i run 3200x1200 dual 19in CRts and i can full names on the taskbar - and for webpages tabs work wonders, and safari if great IMO
Yeah, tabs are great, but MS Explorer doesn't support tabs.

As for my monitor. It depends. Sometimes a single 1280 wide TFT screen, but sometimes 2560 is the width (two screens). For the latter, the Taskbar is OK, but the former the Taskbar is not. But I still find Exposé better, even with a 2560 wide dual screen setup.

I'm not sure if anyone is reading this thread anymore, but I saw this, and I immediately thought of this thread. I will have to admit, even I think this is wrong...

Why does every Mac thread automatically turn into a Holy War between the Mac and the PC.

People, I really don't see what the problem is, if she wants to spend $3.6K on the Mac, then by all means let her go ahead and buy the Mac. If I were about to spend $4K+ on a computer (I assume you'll want a monitor with that), I'd so some research for myself before buying... but hey that's just me. Bottom line is that only you know what you want and need, you're a smart person; read the data yourself.

...and this thread doesn't count as research, it's just people yelling "Mine is better because..." on both sides at this point

NYC has a J&R store. PCs and an Apple store where you can try things out. It's near my job so I get to go there and play during lunch. They have no CRTs whatsoever.
Anyways damn those Vaios are cute, but not really what I need. The G5 was hooked up to one of the Apple Cinema displays... err, *drool*.
I've been avoiding getting LCDs because of the lack of, well, color accuracy.
Will the technology hurry it up? Any word on better color for LCDs?
For now I'll stick to my Viewsonic CRT. But the G5 looked sweet.

Hmm.. you could order those parts online, and ask a mom and pop shop to throw them together. 2GB of RAM, dual 1.8GHZ Opterons, and a 74GB Raptor, 9800 pro.. for 2700 (without shipping)$. Technology truly is great..

the nice LCD's have contrast ratio higher than CRT's these days, so they can produce a wider gamut of color. Of cource, none of this matters until you invest in a color calibration device...

And to all people ranting about how great expose is... Win XP powertoys Alt-Tab replacement does the job perfectly fine (and has been for years now!) and it does not need the $120 yearly tax for the minor version upgrade... (linkin park)

Sorry, but the Taskbar in Windows should be compared to the Dock in Mac OS X. Some may argue the Taskbar is a bit better than the Dock, but overall they're pretty similar in function.

Neither is in the same league as Exposé. Just about everyone I've shown Exposé to drools over it, including the Unix geeks (who have multiple terminal windows etc. open at a time).

Some people have tried to compare the Windows tiling function to Exposé too, but that's just a joke.

ill give you that it looks flasy and cool, but it still serves the same function as a taskbar, easy switching between multipial prpgrams and windows, the taskbar does just that and it does well, ive used it on a mac and i really dont like it i think its annoying, i also dont like not haveing a task bar, the Dock isnt a task bar its an annoyance when everything goes there, and also the fact that when you have photoshop open and you can still click the desktop pisses me off

It's funny you mention that 'cause I feel the exact opposite. I learned PS and AE on Mac and the first time I used them on a PC I was like "WTF, why am I trapped inside a window?" I think having to work inside the PS or AE window to be a waste of space and just makes window management/clutter even worse.

Expose makes people drool because it looks good. That doesn't mean it's not a hack on a crappy window management model.

From what I see the Task bar sort of equals the Dock, but Expose is something else. I do generally work with many windows open in several programs, so that does look very interesting to me.

Caly, based on your previous response, I also think the computer for you is a Mac. Especially considering you're planning on venturing into 3D and Animation. The Macs are extremely powerful in this area. In fact, many professional special effects companies like Industrial Light and Magic uses Macs as well as UNIX machines for all their heavy work.

Well, it's fast!
I guess Poser did start out as a Mac program... and well, WOW Photoshop is a lot faster! I used to be able to go get a drink or two while the program started up, or during a filter running on a 4k by 4k image, and now it just zooms along.
I think the G5s pretty much leave the rest of the Mac lines in the dust. If you've used an older Mac- forget it. The G5s with Panther are whole new beasts.

Oh, Diablo is pretty much the same on either computer (it's installed on my bfriend's PC- right across from my Mac). Same for SIMS, Civ...
