Price of the 4400 by October?

I don't see it dropping much until closer to Xmas, at the earliest. It's likely to be available only in limited quantities until at least July/August and that will keep prices high (if not higher). Remember, when something is limited and in demand, the price will rise. It's only after AMD begins a massive rollout of these X2 chips that you'll see prices begin to fall.

I guess it somewhat depends on what Intel comes out with. Since I'm been so long out of the loop, I have no idea about the Intel roadmap, or the AMD roadmap for that matter.

I agree several factors

1) What iNtel does pricing wise
2) demand for the chip...if it stays high and they cant keep them in stock why would they drop the price...you drop price to move product that is sitting and curb the demand to match your supply...If they drop the price and Intel has nothing to compare to it, it would just increase demand evenmore...which ofcourse they would have difficulty meeting....

3)when the next AMD X2 cpus are released....a likely 5000+ and 5200+ model....

4)If they can ramp up production coupled with better yields we could see a drop...

my guess is that as soon as AMD gets some good yields, 1) there will be a price decrease, and more importantly 2) there will be 2.0GHz dual cores, maybe even 1.8GHz ones. I'd love to see a 2GHz, 2x1MB 4000+ for like $300 and a 3800+ for $250, and considering Intel's pricing, I think that's where AMD would like to go as soon as it can. It's pretty obvious that AMD is coming out with low volume, high cost CPUs because they can't make a lot of chips right now, so they will make more money making a niche product than a mainstream lineup. As soon as they can, I'm sure there will be $200-300 dualies.

Great Post. I agree. I think AMD will have sub $300 dual cores as soon as they can manage it. If we could buy a sub $300 X2 it would definitly beat all the intel solutions in the price/performance department. (This is assuming the Intel Dual Core MBs stay at a similar price point as they are now making an AMD MB/CPU combo much more affordable if the AMD CPU's were comparably priced)

I am planning on getting one after a serious price drop, maybe when its $200-250 most. I am thinking it wont happen until 300mm wafers start coming out of fab36 hopefully early 20006.
