Oh, well, for the next race we can use GPUs, so maybe we can do that race only on GPUs while people do the "other" race on CPUs?

Belated THANKS for a belated start. Is the next race genefer?? or PPS-Sieve?

Belated answer: The next race is Genefer. PPS Sieve is in December.

Looks like it's finally time to bump this thread! It's been a long time since we've had an LLR race, hasn't it?

ok, I've got myself in the on deck circle: I've just got to time my lunch correctly to switch to CULLEN.

I just started a few Cullen WUs on my Core 2, to see how long they'd take. At this rate they'd take 6 days, and the race is only 5 days.

I cut down to two threads on a Core 2 Quad, because my RAM is usually the bottleneck, and let that run overnight. It looks like that will allow 2 WUs to finish just in time, I hope.

Edit: And I have at least one computer that will have no problem with the deadlines.

My newer laptop with avx ran a cullen wu in around 48 hours. Core speed was around 2.5ghz.
If they scale in time like SOB wu's they are going to take 3 times as long on my older athlon2 and a little over twice as long on my i5-460m.
Shall see if I can complete anything in time.

Whoa. These tasks have officially tried to melt Mjolnir. Within 10 minutes my core temp was at 81C.

The fan speed was at 70%, 2150rpm, and plenty noisy to start with, 100% only brought it down to 76C.

Corsair, I think it is time your H100i liquid cooler and I parted ways.

AVX code is brutal. Some have claimed it kills overclocked systems, something to do with increased power draw. I'm not sure on the specifics.

Looks like I'll do about 5 wu's. Going at the rate of 1% per hour.

This 'race' is like watching paint dry. :whiste::whiste::whiste:

Day 1 stats:

Some guy from SETI Germany actually got a few Cullen WUs done with a new Skylake build.

Otherwise, no results yet.

CPUID's HardwareMonitor used to display my CPU power usage correctly, but now it seems the decimal point is to the left 2 places from where it should be. Assuming 2.49w is actually 249watts, no wonder my chip is a touch warm with 4 tasks plus GPU project. Three tasks brought it down to 2.03w (203watts, presumably). I can tolerate the thought of my 140w TDP CPU running for a while at that power level.

Impressive!

I had to cut Mjolnir down to 3 tasks due to this issue, but those tasks are now done.

I decided I had time to let the twin Xeons have a go at this race.

I spent 9 hours on Labor Day trying every setting in BIOS to overclock BumbleBee. I guess I can say I had some success, I did manage to get the turbo speeds to run at max (2.8GHz), without dropping. I left the twin, WUSS, at stock settings.

So I set WUSS on this PG race first, and carefully observed the temps as I allowed one PG task in at a time. Ah, good, power draw staying at 120w per the TDP.

So I let BumbleBee have some PG race tasks....and got distracted. I finally remembered to check the temps, assuming that 120w TDP was unbreakable. I had Leiden Classical finishing up, so one by one more PG tasks were running. And with only 4 PG tasks, the power to the CPU was 281 watts. D:

So if you're overclocking, and your CPU is capable of AVX, avoid AVX tasks like the plague!!!

AVX code is brutal.
AVX code is brutal.
AVX code is brutal.
AVX code is brutal.

I generally find it's better to run as many tasks as there are real cores, but down-clock the CPU with something like ThrottleStop. Of course, with WUs this long and a race this short, this race may be an exception.

I have of course reset the BIOS to default to eliminate the AVX gone wild scenario.

Long term race, I fully agree.

But I'm just running one set of WU's per machine, then resuming normal operations, and that would take all the fun out of seeing something like this in your BOINC manager.

We must be in Alaska, because we're between Russia and Canada. 11th is a good start, and it looks like Tony, at least, will have a lot more to come.

Looks like each WU is about 10,000 points. I'm hoping for 8 this race.

Im starting to have doubts I will complete anything by the end of the race. The margin was a little close on my i5-460 118 hours. The athlon is definitly out at 130+. My only other contender is hardly on much each day (stealth install on wifes laptop).

Less than 24 hours to go! If Tony doesn't flush some more work soon, I might beat him! (I'm not expecting to; this is just encouragement. )

If all your WUs look like they won't make it, try suspending some to let the others meet the deadline. This especially works on Core 2, and on anything with hyper-threading on.

Thanks for the update. I'll finish three more on time and that's all for me. Better than I thought. Might have to build one of them fancy skylake rigs.

It's been a bit of a nail-biter with these tasks. I've had to cut a few, and juggle the rest around some to keep them balanced. PrimeGrid is the only project I know where every other time you look at it, the estimated time remaining counts UP instead of down. lol

I'm down to my final contenders, about half the original number of players I fielded. Although they now count DOWN consistently, they're not quite keeping time. My slowest player is ~90 minutes ahead of the clock at the moment, but slipping.

Nothing more for me to do to help them but watch. They each have their own core, GPU computing is suspended, and they hollar back at me "I'm givn' it all sh's got Capt'n!!!"

If your estimates are inaccurate, you should upgrade to a later version of BOINC.

You need 7.3.18 or later.
Good luck!
