Wow, dajeepster blew by me like I was standing still!!
Well I got a rig running with the 8800GT (ubuntu).. except the boxed cooler sounds like a jet engine and I'm too tired to change it or try setting up fan profiles manually. So it'll have to wait till tomorrow to start churning WUs.
I don't think you need to. Personally, I got the drivers from nvidia's web site and installed them from a text terminal (ctrl-alt-F2, instead of F7). I also got BOINC from the main site, extracted it, and then copied the executables to /usr/bin, over my older executables.I need to upgrade Debian to Squeeze to get the correct nvidia drivers and the latest BOINC edition.

i lost one computer due to a harddrive failure in raid0... working to bring it up now with another harddrive
