Ok, I got the hardware issue resolved and my quad is back up and running.

However, I still have a software issue.

Question: I need to upgrade Debian to Squeeze to get the correct nvidia drivers and the latest BOINC edition. So, do I do it today or wait till the end of the challenge? This last install was my 13th since Wednesday because there are several install issues with Squeeze. Should I try again?

Well I got a rig running with the 8800GT (ubuntu).. except the boxed cooler sounds like a jet engine and I'm too tired to change it or try setting up fan profiles manually. So it'll have to wait till tomorrow to start churning WUs.

I don't think you need to. Personally, I got the drivers from nvidia's web site and installed them from a text terminal (ctrl-alt-F2, instead of F7). I also got BOINC from the main site, extracted it, and then copied the executables to /usr/bin, over my older executables.

Edit: Do you really need newer nvidia drivers? Plenty of old ones work fine with my app; if your GPU is supported by your current drivers you should be alright.

Edit2: Six-hour stats!

Lost a power supply.

The AMD Quad was cold when i found it. I murdered the power supply (yes it was a cheep one)

I had a new one here ( I repair computers also)

I did not see it was down for about two hours. ( Wife said O ya, it stopped around dinner time)

So a 15 min change and it's back on duty now.

I was wondering why my stats were going backwards....LOL

All software issues are solved. The problem is the mobo, it doesn't allow anything except CrossFire cards.

I've never heard of a mobo like that. Some don't allow cards to be combined on one video output without CrossFire; but you should be able to use one or two nVIDIA cards independently.

Just upgrade BOINC - download BOINC, execute the .sh file, and copy the boinc* binaries in the resulting BOINC directory to /usr/bin - and let me know if that doesn't work.

Edit: You might need the script in steps 14-16 here if you don't use a monitor or a dummy plug.

Here's the starting messages for the 2 quads, both with 9800GTs

This works: BioStar mobo

Local time is UTC -8 hours
NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce 9800 GT (driver version unknown, CUDA version 3000, compute capability 1.1, 512MB, 336 GFLOPS peak)

This doesn't work: GigaByte mobo
Starting BOINC client version 6.10.58 for x86_64-pc-linux-gnu
Config: use all coprocessors
Config: GUI RPC allowed from:

No usable GPUs found

OS is identical. Boinc is newest version. nvidia driver is 195.36.31-6. Libcuda1 is also 195...
cc_config has option <use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>
And boinc-client initialization script has boinc-user set to root instead of boinc

Edit: both comps have nvidia-kernel as a service. And fglrx-atieventsd is also a service.

And boinc-client is a service.

LOL

I'm finding my weak spot with the AMD machine.

Power supply #2 Is Dead.

Had to wait till 10 Am to get a Thermotake 500 watt Supply.

No boot at first, then i see i forgot to plug in the 4 pin by the Chip.

Beep.

Up and running again.

I need another case with better airflow, but that can wait a bit.

Cover off and running!

Go TeAm AnandTech!

Wow, 7.6 million cobblestones in one day! Not bad!

But we're going to have to work hard to stay ahead of BOINCStats. Plus the Czechs could make a late run, and we might even be able to catch the Ukraine. So let's put on some more crunching power!

I wish I had some more. Filibusterman is awfully close now.

Normally I do better in non-gpu prime grid races since my best gpu is amd. The 5858 takes up .7 CPU, compared to .0X on my lesser nvidia gpus. Now that my i7 is stable (fingers crossed) I should ram my production up a bit.
