Name something.

He was a major star of the 80s, and you could name 100 more, who if they never existed, would change nothing about anything that's come after them.

Entertaining, extraordinarily gifted musician. A little bit of a nutjob (or maybe a lot), but nothing world changing.

I think the global tributes show how much of an influence he had.

Now that's a fucking homage... when they tint The White House, when the French make the Eiffel Tower purple - you know you had some fans.

Suck it down Kanye! Choke on that shit!

The smart and talent ones are dead and we are stuck with Bieber and the Kardashian clan.
I'm not stuck with them, in fact AFAIK I have never heard a single thing from either. I would not celebrate (or mourn) if I heard they died, I'd be unaffected. I'm not exactly in the main stream! I do a DJ thing on college radio, have for decades, and that stuff isn't in rotation or our very extensive library (over 100k total CDs, LPs, 12", 10", 7"). You don't even hear about Kardashians, Bieber on our station. We are mourning the loss of Prince, and I will do a tribute set on my show tomorrow afternoon.

Here are a few facts about Prince.

1) He sold over 100 million of records.
2) He wrote a lot of good songs such as "Nothing Compare To You" by S. O'Conor and "Manic Monday" by The Bangles.
3) He collaborated with other well know singers such as "Stand Back" with Stevie Nicks.
4) He was willing to fight the record company for control of his own music (18 years with Warner Bros.)
5) He could play the guitar, piano, drum, and other musical instruments. No auto tune crap.
6) He was a very darn good basketball player even he was only 5'2" or so.
7) He was not a sold out for money as other singers.
8) He was a singer that appreciated his fans, unlike other singers that behaved like they were all that.
9) He was a very mellow guy, drove around in his neighborhood on a bicycle.

That's all I can remember for now.
Cool stuff. Didn't know he was 5'2". I guess that explains a lot. Guys that short can get a complex that elevates them to great things. Napoleon comes to mind. How about Danny Devito in Good Fellas?

I like that image of Prince riding around his neighborhood on a bicycle.

I remember seeing a relatively very short guy dominate a 5 on 5 full court indoor pickup basketball game, years ago, there were a lot of much taller and very good players out there. He was hell of energetic and muscular. I was really impressed. Short is not a handicap, except you need a box, chair, stool, ladder to reach a high shelf. That's really about it.

Truthfully Prince's career ended 20 years ago so I'm not sure what all the fuss is about.

Even Drudge had purple fonts on his website.

..in terms of revenue it never ended. He was an industry within himself..employed numerous people that will greatly miss their positions. Sad state of affairs and a serious reflection on American society that so many talented people end up on the hook of addiction and start the downward spiral with recreational intoxication.

Napoleon wasn't short.

Rumor is that he has over 2,000 unreleased tracks in his personal vault ranging pretty much all musical genres (and I would assume quality as well).

It will be interesting to see if some of these ever get released. If they do it will certainly be for the label's benefit (which would be VERY anti-Prince) And if they don't,sadly the fans are shortchanged.

Prince seems like the type of guy that would have thought this all through and had detailed instructions outlined in his will.

Would be cool if he'd asked to have them all released for free. Or maybe sold and all the proceeds going to charity.

Relatively speaking at that place and time, no. Compared to me, yes

Actually, Napoleon was pretty tall/of average height for his era: 5'7" Yes, he is short to some individuals (like you or me or any professional basketball player outside of Muggsy Bogues or Spud), but we are more the outliers than he would have been.

The portrayal of Napoleon being freakishly short was a notion cocked up by British intelligence and historians--I think it was actively directed by the military as a way to diminish his stature in the public psyche. Think: Donald Trump and his tiny freak hands. It's a portrayal that has certainly stuck around in the English-speaking world, but it is not how he is perceived by the French. In fact, I recall that Napoleon was actually tall compared to the ave Frenchman of the time.

Further, it's also a bit of a myth that people were shorter in previous centuries than they are today. Beds weren't strangely short in colonial times times because people were shorter, but because it was fashionable at the time to sleep with one's legs dangling off the end of the bed at the knees. It was thought that this promoted circulation.

Agreed -- I would venture to believe a lot of them are "rough" or "for fun" or "just shitty" (at least in his eyes) and he was a perfectionist that probably wouldn't want them to be heard. Maybe he has them nicely organized into folders: "Yes" and "No"?

Part of me still dreams this is the greatest troll of all time and he's actually alive and kicking and is waiting to "rise from the dead" in the greatest promotional stunt of all time. Sot of like people believing Tupac and Elvis aren't really dead

Prince always had his fans, and the Purple Rain album was a favorite of mine, but I'm curious when people think he went from pop star in the 80's, to somewhat 'past-his-time' 90's and some 'wtf' music...to now being a musical icon respected worldwide?

Was it the consistent respect he got from others in the industry...or that he stayed in touch with his fans and still gave great shows...or that other celebrities held him in such high regard over the years? Or that while he seemed 'out there' at times, he was actually a very likeable person in interviews? It seemed it took a very long time for him to get respect from the masses that went beyond his fan base.

Yes, these are all the reasons. And that he was consistently putting out quality, original music. You don't have to have commercial appeal to be a "genius" and impossibly talented/influential. These things are not mutually inclusive.

I think he was a musical genius. He produced great music back in the late 80 to early 90's. He played the instrument very well. I haven't heard any new song from him lately but nevertheless his "1999" and "when doves cry" will never fade. I saw him lately at Jimmy Kimmel live and thought he was still talented.
Wonder if trying to get another hit is what killed him? No matter how grounded you are its hard to be on top and all of a sudden your not .
