Prince always had his fans, and the Purple Rain album was a favorite of mine, but I'm curious when people think he went from pop star in the 80's, to somewhat 'past-his-time' 90's and some 'wtf' music...to now being a musical icon respected worldwide?

That's just how it typically works. Period of brilliance from age 18 to 30, another 20 or 30 years of churning out records that every once in while generate significant sales. Unheralded concert tours attended mostly by older fans with lots of disposable income. Eventually, reduced to performing at state and then county fairs, motorcycle bars, Elks clubs.

It's played out again and again. Prince died relatively young, so we didn't get to see the full cycle.

SNL did a throwback EP and he basically just destroyed it on this amazing set. I mean, I'm still "whatever" towards most of his music, but for an SNL performance - daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn.

That's awesome.

I still like this more, which I posted a few posts/days before:

http://recode.net/2016/04/23/prince-snl-celebrity-video/

but it's worth reposting. I recommend enduring the Tonight Show set up with Jimmy Fallon before the Prince video, but in either order it doesn't really matter. It's actually kind of cool watching the show first and as the camera moves around, realize the neutron bomb of celebrities filling that room. It's nuts.

also, the performance is godly.

Prince dead? -- confirmed
How do you know? I'm listening to an all Prince show on radio and the DJ speculated that maybe Prince is not dead. He avowed that if anyone was apt to perpetrate a hoax concerning their death, Prince was that person.

Prince was rather more classy than Hitler, he wouldn't have anything to say to him, not that you want to hear. Elvis? Damn, he never even learned to play guitar. Prince was in another class. He played everything, and damned well.

Watching the news and entertainment stations covering Prince, I've come away with this conclusion - it's unfortunate his only musical creations were Purple Rain, Darling Nikki, and Let's Go Crazy.

What? No "Little Red Corvette"? No "When Doves Cry"? Blasphemy.

Miramonti is criticizing the media that seems to only understand that Prince is known for like, 3 hits that are ~3 decades old.

I think?

A lot of this perceived gap in Prince's output that seems to be inversely correlated to his extreme, seemingly "underground" popularity is probably due to how strongly he has guarded his image and his property. You won't find him in any of the sources that most of the kids today use for music. He long ago abandoned the video and pure commercial aspects of the industry as he's been fighting his own little war against the music industry and all others trying to license his name (all of that "The Artist" stuff). That is not to say that he isn't commercial with all of his staging and crafted image, that's just part of his package.

What his has done for him has allowed him to maintain strict licensing control of everything that he puts out. Considering his icon status among fans and nearly every musician anywhere, this = $$$.

I remember reading recently that the Stones are worth something like $300 million, or at least Jagger is. Consider that they still tour off and on and have their shit everywhere and can be found in nearly in catalogue, on youtube, wherever.
Apparently, Prince's fortune was reported the other day at ~$330million. About the same as Jagger, with far less public presence, and certainly far, far less hits than the Stones.

But Prince hasn't disappeared. He was always a rather public figure around Minneapolis and toured regularly, including very small gigs and free shows at his compound, I think? That kind of power and control, you can basically do whatever the fuck you want and for Prince, it seemed to be hanging around and playing music all day long with various people. He seemed to be insanely prolific and if the rumors are true, his unheard vault would mean that everything that is known about him really is the tip of the iceberg. He was a true performer, which you don't really see much of these days with musicians.

Fortunately Sirius is still running a Prince tribute station that has been playing basically everything he's ever done. And lots of musically related songs, too.

Huh? He had at least 37 album releases (the last one just a couple of months ago or so), also there's supposed to be a lot of stuff, some really great, in his vault. He tried hard to keep a tight leash on his music, he was obsessed early on with "freedom," which had a lot to do with his rebellion against Warner Brothers' controls on him what with his contract.

A lot of people (just read this thread) have very limited ideas on who and what Prince was, what he'd done.

A lot of Prince's power and ability as an artist stemmed from his attitudes.

While that might be an accurate description for a vast majority of musicians there are some who get to a level that no, they will never wind up playing at "Elks clubs" LOL. That's for the one's who didn't sell millions of albums for years but had 1-2 decent albums and then disappeared from the scene, your talking "Foghat" or "Blue oyster cult", not Prince or for example Rush.

Name something.

He was a major star of the 80s, and you could name 100 more, who if they never existed, would change nothing about anything that's come after them.

Entertaining, extraordinarily gifted musician. A little bit of a nutjob (or maybe a lot), but nothing world changing.
Did you know that a few decades ago, Prince had CD-Rom and his own virtual reality website and music streaming before anyone else even knew what streaming was?

He was a

I like his music just fine, but it was pop. I don't think I've given him much thought since his string of hits and the peak of his stardom in the 80s. Never would have guessed he had 37 albums. I thought he knocked out like 6 or 7 and then turned into Elvis, doing drugs, shooting TVs, changing his name to a symbol, screwing an endless string of needy women.

Did he change anything about American music? Doubtful.

Just curious, who in your opinion was the last person to change American music??
