What would you recommend for a printer/fax/scanner/copier all in one unit? I know most all-in-one units are garbage, hence why I am asking for your opinion. I don't want a garbage one. Looking to spend around $1,000. Spend my money.

Are sure about the price range ? ? ... $1000 is way to high

Look at HP7310 or HP7410

They are both excellent units with only 3 differences between them:

7410 can take 2 paper trays at same time
7410 has a wireless connection (if you need it)
7410 is a little taller because of the extra paper tray

Both can do:

Print, Copy, Fax, Scan, Duplex Print / Copy / Scan
Auto Document Feed and both have card slots for
most common photo cards ... they run at most $499
for the HP7410 unit .. I myself am considering the HP7310
this summer to replace an old Lexmark X73

Lots of options---but you are very vague about what your needs are---or your anticipated printing volume---so its gotta be about your needs---and not someone else's needs.---and once your needs get identified--how much do it your self education are you willing to do?

But question one---do you need color output?---thats a bigie---if just black and white---a monochrome laser may be the best answer. And if you are willing to look at the used or refurbished market----there are tons of bargains out there or an opportunity to go way upscale on what a grand would buy you new----with HP business monochrome lasers being real workhorses---and 200,000 pages on the odometer still does not even begin to scratch the brand new off performance.---with consumable costs running as low as a half cent a page after paying for the paper.

If you want color---then the answer is not as easy----and for actual GOOD quality and LOW consumable costs---a grand may not cut it for something in a new color Laser---while cheap proconsumer models exist---they won't go much distance---2500 pages or so before they need toner replacement that equals the purchase price of the printer brand new---and they have fairly high consumable costs--and to do an actual photograph---you are now in ink jet territory---which is the other option for color. And almost all new inkjets are chipped--which tends to tie you to expensive OEM cartridges.---unless you self educate yourself at places like the nifty stuff forums or steves digicams. Unlike BruceB, I would recommend against HP inkjets because of the high consumable costs---and instead recommend one of the better high end Canon multifunctionals using the CLI-5&8 cartridges if you go the inkjet route---although something like the HP1100 might be worth a look---they use giant sized black ink cartridges---I think something like 58.5 ml.

And if you need a network printer---that adds further complications into your search----but if you have some serious needs---printer selection is a complex question--and before you let a grand burn its way through your pocket---some research may be in order if you don't want buyers remorse. But the answer is also based on YOUR NEEDS. And oddly enough, its also somewhat based on where you live---how far away is replacement supplies and repair---and how hard is it to get access to lower priced alternative suppliers?

You make a number of good points ... however, he did not specifically say he wants a Laser
so I suggested the two HP all in one units that are very good .. and both of them can be networked
with the HP7410 having Wireless Networking built in .. so if Inkjet is his choice these are very well
designed printers ... a lot of offices use them ... and so will I (the HP7310) when I change printers / all in one
later this year .. my desk does not have enough Shelf Height for the 2 tray HP7410 ... so when I print
envelopes, I need to change paper manually .. not a big deal & I do not need the Wireless Feature

If your looking at just b/w, I'd definately without a question go with laser. If it's going to be color, I'd stay away from laser. But this will play a part in it. Color laser costs too much in consumables unless your leasing the machine (what our office does)

To Kevnich2,

Who says---Color laser costs too much in consumables unless your leasing the machine (what our office does)

May I ask what it ends up costing your office per page to print under the terms of the lease?---and are not the cost of the consumables simply being passed on to the leasee by the lease fees?---even though you do not own the actual printers.

You need to decide what Operating System you will use.

HP makes good products but is having problems with Vista.

I'm really struggling to get a All-In-One printer to work with Windows Vista.
HP is only providing very basic drivers for Vista at this time. So advance features like scanning don't work.

I had an OfficeJet 7130 that would not work, Called tech support and was told I needed to put it under a service contract before they would tell me how to fix the problem. Instead I put the money toward buying a new printer/scanner.

I called HP Pre-sales support and told them what I wanted and asked if it would work with Vista. They assured me it would work just fine. Went out and bought a new HP OfficeJet Pro L7680 printer. It has the same problems as my older 7130.Called Tech support and after spending a hour doing things I had done prior to calling with no resolution. the tech tells me the drivers are not ready and it may be several months.

I'm pissed, I bought a scanner to use today, not several months from now.

You could look into the canon mp line (mp530, mp600 or mp830 depending on features you want).

I would suggest HPs new aio's that will be released in the next week or so.

They are simply the best inkjet aios that money can buy.

The L7000 series are sweet and the consumables costs are unmatched by any inkjet printer using OEM consumables.

To Chucko,

who states--The L7000 series are sweet and the consumables costs are unmatched by any inkjet printer using OEM consumables.

Your L7000 is simply the HP1100 I said was worth a look tricked out in aio form---its OEM black ink consumable costs narrowly edge out a Canon using black CLI-5 OEM cartridges. On color OEM ink costs the Canons using the CLI-8 more than make up the difference compared to L7000 OEM costs. Using monster sized 9 pico liter drops when the Canon uses 2 pico liter drops. The Canon will also run rings around the L7000 in terms of quality of color output.---and L7000 is designed to be competitive in the color laser office market--but still worth a long hard look if it meets your needs.

But do not believe HP advertising hype for a minute--it may be true that compared to other HP inkjets--the L7000 is unmatched---but not true that its unmatched against other non-HP printers. Overall the L7000 OEM to OEM is perhaps the world's only printer that gives a Canon using the Cli-5&8 cartridges a run for its money--but it still falls short on economy and quality of output---and purchase price.

I just snagged a C7180 (top-end consumer model) for $269 from HP's site. I do get an employee discount plan (I don't work for HP, but a partner), but there was still a $90 instant rebate on it, which brought it down to around $300 before the employee discount. I've been extremely happy with it. It was a toss-up between this and the 7410, but I wanted the better photo output and scanning (read reviews to see what I mean), and I didn't want to have to change out the inks every time I needed to print a photo. Plus, built-in wireless was a must for me, or I would have considered the high end Canon. I'm a little bummed about not having the legal-sized scanning bed and/or the ADF, but if I'm realistic about the amount I need to scan (I've lived w/o a scanner now for 3 years), I can make the sacrifice. This thing has everything and the kitchen sink, and it actually does it all well. There was a time when I wouldn't have touched an AIO with a 10-foot pole, but they've come a long way. I highly recommend it.

To Bassoprofundo,

I just want to stress that the C7180 and the L7000 are totally different HP printers---using different cartridges--and built to do different things.

But you stress a canon weakness---poor wireless net work support built in---and rip off rates to add it as a factory option.

Just a point ... Until March 10, 2007 Office Depot has the HP7410 on Sale
for a Total Cost of $199 + Tax after you get an Instant and a Mail In Rebate

That is by far the cheapest I have ever seen that model
