That's not too difficult to believe. You have to put things in perspective.

Over the summer, a co-worker constantly complained about the price of gasoline, but I'd rag on him because he'd pay $1.25 for a 20 oz. bottle of water. I'd also remind him how much a gallon of milk or OJ cost. He always stopped complaining.

Rob, over at Cockeyed.com, has a great breakdown of the price for a gallon of various liquids.

If I could use 5 mL of gasoline to run my car for 6 months then I'd gladly pay those prices.

Sorry, but that perspective is flawed. You could compare prices ONLY if consumption was comparable as well.

1. Hobbicolors on eBay: http://search.ebay.com/hobbicolors

2. Formulabs from alotofthings.com: http://www.alotofthings.com/viartshop/products.php?category_id=4 Choose from the side depending how many colors are in your printer.

PS: The Gasoline argument versus milk is the weakest one. A gallon of milk can last you a week but your car will need plenty of gallons to get you through the week if you have far to drive and it will cost you a lot more then $2-3 that the milk cost. Also you don't have to have milk, there is OJ, soda and of course tap water.

If I remember rightly HP made 5 billion in net profits one year and 4 billion was from ink sales alone.

So true it is. I've about 18 printers in my closet/storage.
Note, that OfficeMax and Walgreens have started a Ink cartridge refilling service since it make a lot profit.

Why I will never own a Lexmark or HP printer (And I think canon is going with the carts with the printer heads built in too now) for the ink on them is out the roof, and it is cheaper to replace them then to buy ink for them. You need to buy a printer with the ink heads as part of the machine NOT part of the ink carts and ink prices will be a Bajillion prices lower

I use a Epson R340 printer (prints on paper and cds and costs $69 Shipped refurb'd at Epson.com) that uses ink tanks and 3rd party ink at meritline.com under the RiData name that costs me $1.15 per color Shipped when you buy 48 carts at a time (around $50 shipped) The printer uses 6 tanks at a time @ $1.15 a pop so to change all at once is only $6.90 RiData isn't near as good as Swiftink's Ink, but I cant afford that stuff right now.
Screw OEM inks at $1.15 I can print what ever I want when I want and not have to worry to much about my ink.

HP having the heads built in is a good thing. It means that you can refill without worrying about damaging anything. It doesn't void your warranty either.
