printer/MFC drum counter reset

Does anyone have a idea about how to reset the drum counter?
Instead of buying a new drum, I was told that I can simply reset the drum counter. To be honest, I don't know what this means. I am also not sure if I still need to buy a new drum, or just reset the old drum.
If I don't have to buy a new drum (at the time the drum needs to be replaced), what is the new drum selling everywhere for?

Brother MFC-6800.

I just searched a bit furhter and got the info regarding my question.
Some of the drums had a red light (empty warning light) even if it still can be used. Then, the resetting the counter works. But, if it is empty, or near empty I should buy a new drum.

Please verify if it is correct.

My dilemma starts when the prints had 2-3 vertical lines and was told from Brother that I need to replace the drum. The price of new drum is running around 130-150. The price of new MFC-6800 is about $200-240. Then, I started to think to replace the drum in an economical way.

You can usually do a cold reset (careful if you have a jet direct card-will reset ip info) and that would reset the counters. But if you are having print quality issues (scars in the imaging drum) I would replace it.
