Printer Nightmare....

Hey People. I seem to be having a rare problem with my printing system for win xp pro sp2. For some reason, the printer will not print anything, it just shoots out a blank page with no ink. I tried 2 seperate printers, both of which work on my linux box and my finace's computer (Couldn't call her computer a box, it might sound bad . Anyway, the printers are an HP 7550 and an HP all in one 2170. There has to be something wrong with my installation, but I re-installed my OS and the drivers several times and still have the same problem. Is there anyway to re-install the module for windows that concerns the printing system. No wonder I love linux.

Also, With both printers I used a USB connection and I don't think there is a parrallel port on the back of either to test. Never had this problem with the service pack 1, just started happening with SP2 a few months ago I i cannot printer from my box. I have 8 USB ports and I tried them all. Much help appreciated.

Specs for my rig:
ASUS K8V DELUXE SE
ATHLON 3200+ (754 pin)
1024 mb Corsair RAM

Look in Device Manager to make sure the USB ports are properly installed. There are numerous USB patches available from M$ and the chipset makers than may need to be installed or updated.. Uninstall all currently installed printer drivers and disconnect the printers before you install any USB driver patches or updates. Then reboot again after installing ALL necessary USB stuff. Then reinstall the printer drivers (one at a time and test before installing the other) ! EXACTLY ! as instructed by the printer mfr. (YES, that means get out the manual or DL the setup instructions - don't assume that the instructions are the same for both printers).
. Wouldn't hurt to check the FAQs on HP's site for any known issues.

See how that works.

Thanks for the response, I did try to reinstall the usb ports but had no luck. This is the strangest most annoying problem I have ever encountered. I am at a loss. All other USB products I have work fine, scanner, Mp3 player, keyboard mouse, etc. I tried unpluging all devices and just runing the printer but with no luck. There has to be something with SP2 for XP that is causing this problem. I have heard of the print spooler becoming corrupted but I don't know much about reinstalling it. The USB port drivers i Believe are under windows SP1 and i could not find any available patches. If someone has information on a fix or a link to them, that would be great.

If anyone has any remote ideas I would appreciate it. I will try anyting at this point expect for a reinstall of the operating system which I have already done with no success. I tried to call Microsoft but that was real joke, I couldn't even understand the person I was talking too, and They were of no help whatsoever. You figure Bill would pull his head out of his ass by now and support their products a little better(dammit it makes me mad how much money their products are with lousy support). I tried searching the Microsoft Knowlege base, but it seems im the only person with this problem. I'm in desperate need of a software engineer at this point.

Look in your printer's manual (may be a .PDF file on the driver CD) in the troubleshooting section and/or at the FAQ on their web site. That is an issue that is usually covered.

RE:"buy a new one"

Two "money pit" printers is enough, no?

PS. Its a driver problem.

You almost answered your own question: re-install XP without SP2.

thanks for all the replies fellas, but the solution isn't in the HP manual or PDF, HP doesn't seem to know what hell the problem is (Only the weather in Calcutta India) - Thought mabay i could do something with the regisrty, the only thing at this point that makes sense.

Mismajor...

I'm more knowledgeable about Canons but here is what works with a Canon...you might try it. No guarantees.

Well I still can't get this POS to print. Anyone else having this problem? I recieved a few emails from people that saw my post that are having the same problem. If these printers weren't se expensive, i would toss'm and go buy an epson photo printer. I would uninstall SP2 if I could but i can't. My XP pro has SP2 on the cd already and i cannot uninstall it. oh well. This sux. Back the battlefield 2 for the moment....

Update :

I figured it out finally with some help. It's definatley SP2 and it's the "Data Exacution Prevention" feature that was causing all the comotion. Since I have the athlon 64 3700+ chip, i don't need the hardware prtection so i changed it to "Turn on DEP for essential windows programs and services only". If anyone else is having this problem, which I know there are, make that change and it should work.

Right Click My Computer
Properties
"Advanced" Tab
Under "Performance" section click "Settings" button
"Data Execution Prevention" tab
Click first option "Turn on DEP for essential windows programs and services only"
Click ok and your all set
