Printing photos for Mothers Day

Not sure if there's n easy answer to this. i have two heart shaped lockets that i need to make samller pictures from so they can be put into lockets. Is there any program that would make this easier? I tried to use irfnaview to shrink the pics down and they really looked horrible on good canon photo paper pro paper.
Is there any other software or ideas that I could try? I realize there may not be any software to let me print different sized hearts but if anyone has ever done this and has any tips please let me know.

At any rate, are the reduced-sized pictures good-looking on your monitor? If so, and the print output is bad like you say, you have a printer/printing problem. Perhaps the dpi scaling is wrong, so that when it looks big/good enough on your monitor, there isn't enough detail at the printer for the size.

Were it me in your shoes with Mothers' Day approaching fast, I'd think about my circle of friends/family and see if you know any of them that are halfway decent with photo-processing/printing. If so, and there's a decent chance of this, you could get this done with a lot less effort and aggravation, and hopefully pick up some knowledge on the way.

did you set the dpi to 300? resample with the slow option?

I usually use photoshop, but I'm surprised irfanview wasn't able to do it.
