We printed our boarding passes exactly 24 hours before scheduled take off for Southwest Airlines and got B5 and B7 on the first flight, A40 and A41 on the return flight. How in hell do you get A1 or even A25? Do they have special privileges?

Many were boarding with passes shown on their cell phone screens. How do they do that?

The pass is emailed to you and you open it on your cell phone, or they email you a link to a website that you display. It's not a special app or anything.

download the airline app. after you check-in the boarding pass will show up and you use your phone to get through TSA and the scanner at the gate.

i have not printed a boarding pass in a while and its great not having to remember to go down to the hotels PC and print the boarding pass.

A-List (Southwest frequent flyers) get checked in up to 3 days in advance. Same with EarlyBird if you pay for it. Also, if you have a connection, you get checked-in for your entire itinerary, even if your subsequent flights may not leave until later in the day.

I love Southwest for domestic travel. Beats the hell out of United, Delta, and American.

Frequent fliers also get early pick of seats. I remember when I was a platinum Northwest Worldperks member - free 1st class upgrades every time I flew. Way back when frequent flier miles actually meant something.

A good chunk of the A spots are the positions you get if you pay the extra boarding fee.

They also may be on connecting flights. You check in for all subsequent segments when you check in for the first one so you're ahead of all of those who have to wait for T-24 of the second flight

hmm... interesting... but I also found this in the same link, so here you go OP

Now you can improve your boarding position at the gate or ticket counter on the day of travel with Upgraded Boarding. When available, Upgraded Boarding allows you to secure an earlier boarding position in the A1 - A15 boarding group for just $40 per flight. If you’re interested, just ask the friendly Southwest Airlines Customer Service Agent at your gate before the boarding process begins.

I got A1 on a recent flight and loved not having anyone in front of me. Worth ever penny of the $50. JetBlue.

There's nothing better than paying an extra fee just so you can spend an extra twenty minutes sitting in a tiny seat breathing recycled air waiting for everyone else to board. You know what you should get for $50? A guaranteed seat, an allotment of overhead space, and the chance to board the plane just before it pulls away from the terminal so you don't have to spend any more time in it than is absolutely necessary. I've never understood that as a "perk" of first class; who the fuck wants to spend more time sitting in a plane that isn't moving?

Seems you can still have your pick of seats if you have a decent B number.

If it's Emirates I don't mind. They got a better stocked bar than I have at home!

I hear ya, but being one of the first few on the plane does indeed guarantee overhead space and lets you sit and relax. Otherwise you are in the airport terminal, which is a crowded mess and I usually have to stand by a pillar waiting for my rows to be called. Then when you do get called, you stand on a long line trying to shuffle into the plane and have to fight for overhead space. Then the best part is when we land I'm one of the first ones out.

I just traveled with an infant for the first time, and it does feel special getting to board as one of those "special assistance" groups. But it quickly dawned on me... I'm just sitting here in an uncomfortable seat waiting for everyone else and hoping baby stays asleep (she actually did, both ways, and not a single cry to be heard; what a trooper). Seems like if you're paying extra for a perk, it shouldn't be contingent on having to spend additional time being uncomfortable.

Hey, while we're on the subject of uncomfortable airplane seats, what the hell is up with these new slim seats? Our return flight had them, and while they weren't noticeably more uncomfortable than traditional airplane seats, it quickly becomes obvious that you're sitting in something the width of a soup cracker. You hear about upgraded seats, you think "oh boy, more cushioning..." NOPE. Just a way to cram even more rows in and sell more tickets. Because progress.

And the plane's interior, in my experience, not infrequently smells very strongly of unburned hydrocarbons (presumably jet fuel or that of service vehicles). I truly hate that smell.

More often than not the special assistance group contains at least two families with a bunch of fat kids, the youngest being 8 or 9, parents, and a few extended family members.

i beg to differ. the seats have about 2 inches of foam and after a hour in the air my tailbone is screaming for mercy. seat comfort has declined significantly along with leg room of which my knees are also screaming for mercy.

Last month i attended a event and the organizer had coach buses for shuttle buses from the hotels to the convention center and holy shit those seats were what i remembered what airline seats were. very comfortable.

Well, being the very first on Southwest usually gives you the coveted bulkhead or exit row seats with noticeably more legroom so there is a benefit there. Otherwise I usually agree with you and like to be able to spend more time in the lounge than sitting on a plane while people board. If I could have guaranteed overhead space that would be even better and I would board later.

And I am always highly skeptical of new seats on domestic flights as its usually just another way to cram another row into the plane
