b5 is actually pretty good. with southwest you want to check in asap if you're with someone otherwise you might end up having to sit apart.
You can't do that with Southwest. https://www.southwest.com/html/travel-experience/boarding-your-flight/
Why don't they allow it? It's only fair that people who got the ticket first can get to pick their seat first.
Is it so they can collect the upgraded boarding fee perhaps?
I noticed the last time I flew AA, there were no seats to choose from except upgraded ones when I bought my ticket. But then about a week before the flight, a couple of nonupgrade seats opened up for me to select from (or I could have just left it unassigned and been automatically assigned at the airport/check-in). Seems like a pretty sleezy way to encourage people to pay for an upgraded coach seat.
As for why SW doesn't allow picking seats, perhaps it isn't worth the cost of implementing a seat-picking/assigning system and they collect enough from people that want to board the plane sooner via upgraded boarding passes.
Yes, we did fine with B5. In fact, I can't remember feeling dealt out with SWA. We usually get there reasonably early, but it doesn't matter with them now because you board in order of your seat number nowadays. I always seem to get my window seat, on the side I want, and not over the wing. That's what I care about. Often as not I don't use the overhead bins. When I have used that space, I've not had a problem finding space for my bag. Getting off the plane among the first doesn't concern me. I don't mind sitting there an extra 3-4 minutes.b5 is actually pretty good. with southwest you want to check in asap if you're with someone otherwise you might end up having to sit apart.
