We were flying to LA a few years back and they wouldn't let my mother-in-law fly without a ticket. They always said bags fly for free. I assumed they'd let that old bag fly too, but they were insistent on charging us. I'll never fly that airline again.

when my wife and i flew to san diego a few weeks ago i forgot to check in until like 23 hours before our flight. at that time i got b54 and b59 for out seats.

when we were there, we realized we probably wouldn't sit next to eachother. after group A boarded, the woman at the desk pulled my wife over, noticing that she was pregnant. she asked if she wanted to board right at that instant so she could sit near a bathroom. so we hopped right on and got 2 seats next to eachother luckily. had we waited, most likely we wouldn't have sat next to eachother because we had to sit near the back to do so, which was near a bathroom anyways.

then on our flight back, my wife asked prior to boarding if we could board earlier than like b20 so she could sit near a bathroom, and they gave us a preboard pass which was awesome. so we sat in the first row with no seats in front of us. it was nice to stretch out and stuff. only thing that sucks is you can't put the arm rest up because the trays are inside of them.

Why don't they allow it? It's only fair that people who got the ticket first can get to pick their seat first.

Is it so they can collect the upgraded boarding fee perhaps?

I noticed the last time I flew AA, there were no seats to choose from except upgraded ones when I bought my ticket. But then about a week before the flight, a couple of nonupgrade seats opened up for me to select from (or I could have just left it unassigned and been automatically assigned at the airport/check-in). Seems like a pretty sleezy way to encourage people to pay for an upgraded coach seat.

As for why SW doesn't allow picking seats, perhaps it isn't worth the cost of implementing a seat-picking/assigning system and they collect enough from people that want to board the plane sooner via upgraded boarding passes.

I wonder if they let you board early for having strollers (umbrella). We found out that perk on accident, at least with AA.

Basically all the domestics do it this way now.

Almost everybody I know opts for the paid "early bird check in" option on SW so they're getting their pound of flesh too.

As an elite on AA I have free access to all main cabin seats when booking. Most airlines offer this benefit. Though AA is reducing the amount of their extra legroom seats to squeeze another row back into economy on the 737s ( thanks Parker ).

b5 is actually pretty good. with southwest you want to check in asap if you're with someone otherwise you might end up having to sit apart.
Yes, we did fine with B5. In fact, I can't remember feeling dealt out with SWA. We usually get there reasonably early, but it doesn't matter with them now because you board in order of your seat number nowadays. I always seem to get my window seat, on the side I want, and not over the wing. That's what I care about. Often as not I don't use the overhead bins. When I have used that space, I've not had a problem finding space for my bag. Getting off the plane among the first doesn't concern me. I don't mind sitting there an extra 3-4 minutes.
