Prioritize HD Homerun data with Asus RT-AC68P

I've been trying to set up my router so that the HD Homerun (a network TV tuner) traffic is prioritized over all else. It's very annoying to have recorded a show, but have it glitched out, because a file was being transferred somewhere on the network.

I've been unsuccessful when trying to use the QoS settings within the router. When watching the traffic monitor it doesn't even show any activity when the HDHR is streaming to either of my Windows Media Center computers. The traffic monitoring tool only seems to recognize internet incoming / outgoing data and not a datastream originating from an internal device. That's just my take on it, I could be wrong.

Has anyone been successful in setting up this (or other similar Asus) router to prioritize this kind of video traffic to an HTPC? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't think that QoS applies to LAN connections, only the WAN ethernet interface. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Edit: Same with the "Traffic Monitoring Tool".

Edit: Are these devices connected wired to your LAN, or wireless? If wired, what speed LAN are you running? (Hopefully, Gigabit)

If running gigabit LAN, what devices do you have doing file transfers, that they would take up your entire LAN's network bandwidth? Seems strange to me, quite frankly, and that you may be looking at a different issue, causing your skipping. Like drive IOPS / consistency, on the recording PC.

If you're recording to an SSD, try installing a regular 7200RPM HDD, and recording to that. IOPS consistency is better on a regular HDD. As long as your paging file isn't on the HDD too, then recording should be better.

Thanks for the response! I recognize that part of the problem is that there is no ethernet built into my house and I'm currently using MOCA connectors for the my home network. So the bandwidth is limited to about 200mbps. It's the best that I can currently do, because while it's my dream to run hardwired ethernet that plan is farther down the line.

With the MOCA connectors in place, I need to be able to prioritize traffic from the HD Homerun above everything else. Like I said, transferring a large file at the same time to another MOCA-connected device will saturate the network and glitch out the TV datastream. It's a problem easily replicable, but one I need to be ale to avoid.

most router qos only does WAN traffic, get tomato it will do what you want if you can flash it to your router.

Although having a proper network setup with full duplex would also solve your issues and is probably the smart move. Working around this with qos on a router is a band aid solution IMO, getting a proper high speed network setup is a better long term solution, and will help with other network situations as well im sure.
