Depends, maybe that school has a particular specialty. Maybe the individual didn't get into a less expensive school. Or maybe they visited, liked the atmosphere, students, etc, and decided to take out the loans or had folks that would pay for it.

School choices aren't always all about rank.

private schools 99999999999999999.999999999/1 are much harder to get into then the state schools.

as long as you have a 3.0 gpa and at least 500 on each SAT you will get in any state school.

OP- maybe they got a full scholarship there. only reason I would go to a school like that

None of the flagship state schools (aka the Div I-A football schools ) will take someone with a 1000 SAT (except athletes). Smaller state schools probably would, though.

well ya, I misplaced my words in that post. you will get into A state school, not any. Here in florida, I like to make three levels of state schools. FIU at the bottom, then UCF, then UF.

FIU- you get a 3.0 and 500 on each, your in.
UCF- 3.2 and 550 on each your in
UF- jumps to 4.0 and 600 on each and your in

sure...have a 3.0 and you can get into State school...is there a problem? I'm pretty sure there are also private schools that will take you in if you gave a 3.0/500 just like there are private schools that want a 4.0/600

Are you talking about a 4.0 out of a 5.0? If you had a 4.0 out of a 4.0 and only got a 1200 on the SAT, I would have to wonder about the validity of your school and your 4.0.

My wife went to Vanderbilt for their 2 year Master's in Family Nurse Practitioner. She didn't like the 3 year option at Uni.Cal.San.Fran even though the cost would have been about the same.

She also got the Dean's scholarship for year two. Cha ching, bitches.

Uhhh lots of my friends were denied financial aid. The only ones I know that got it have parents working overseas so they can claim $0 income in the US. Shrug. A parent as an engineer makes over $100k in the Silicon Valley. It sucks if you're feeding a family of 4 and have to pay for college, but I suppose in many other places it's more than enough to get by.

Most of these kids end up majoring in Psychology/History or something as worthless..

because that person couldn't get into Cal and didn't want to go to CSU hayward or csu easy bay whatever you want to call it so they went to St Mary's. When asked they can say they go to school near Berkeley. They can trick those who don't know the area to think this guy going to Cal, they just be modest.

I wouldn't mind paying for a private school as long as my kid was going into a field that paid well. I know kids putting themselves in mountains of debt for crap like theater.

Not sure if this has been said yet as I just whimmed through the reponses and saw mostly financial stuff. I go to a private school because of the smaller class sizes (maximum of 25 students) and the great interaction I get with the professors. I do pay more, but I don't get regret my decision.

I didn't go to UT because I didn't want to sit in classes with 300 other students. Worked out fine for me.

I paid about as much for a private 4 year college as I would have to go to an in state school.

Plus I was coming from a graduating high school class of a whopping 48 students so I appreciated the smaller environment. It also allowed me to participate in DIII athletic sports that I wouldn't have been able to even think of competing in at a state school.

Still a big difference though and I see your point. Also that can easily be $250k since it's not uncommon to go for 5 years for a BA/BS.

Varies with state. Oklahoma state for 4 years in the dorms is only about 40k

I got to a small private school that isn't ranked. I got into honors programs at two large state schools but chose my school instead. Its a different college experience, and you can't underestimate the networking effect, my freshman year dorm was riddle with kids whose families own fortune 500 companies.

Cousin of mine pays about $27,000 a year for instate tuition for UofIL engineering.

Not sure, but with the strong academic based aid package for transfers at the private college nearest me it may be cheaper than my state school.

Absolutely people pay full retail for private schools. Who do you think goes to private schools? IME, the crowd at a private school is much different from the crowd that goes to a public school in that their private school families have many more resources available.

Then your cousin is not considered in-state link

Undergraduate Student Expense Budget 2009-2010 (for a 9-month school year)
Tuition & Fees $33,910
Room & Board $11,940
Books & Supplies $1,512
Personal/Misc. $2,250
Transportation $792
TOTAL $50,404

What's the point of spending 200k over 4 years on a private school when you're going to compete with someone who spent 35k to get a BA from a state school? As an employer myself, I barely look at GPA let alone the school an applicant attended if it isn't a top 10 school...

No.

Free ipod then?

Of course!

And it looks like others jumped on your discussion invitation, so you win twice!

Seems like the OP - and many other people - seem to to misunderstand that there can be many reasons to choose one school over another. Simply put, not all college experiences are equal.

Out of state and Private expenses can be very similar. My first year at University of Illinois was 33k tuition, 8.2k room and board and probably comparable book costs and others. Private schools aren't necessarily more expensive, it's all about what scholarships and grants you qualify for.

If you live in a state like Montana but want to go to a name school, you might have only the choice of out of state and private.

I would rather attend (or hire someone who attended) Michigan, Virginia, UC Berkeley, even Rutgers, UT-Austin, UNC-CH, or UCLA over a majority of private schools that charge $40k+ just because they can. Judging by my high school class, the top kids went to top 20 schools, the next level went to the honors programs of state schools, and the average kids got mommy and daddy to pony up $200k to attend a private out-of-state (next state over) college that costs triple an in-state education. And the state-school kids are now have better jobs while the private school kids live at home.
