Private IP address problem

I have 3 computers on my home network. I use a switch for my cable connection. I have one computer that I can see on the network, and transfer files to and from, but will not access the internet.

I'm sure the problem is the fact that XP keeps assigning the computer an "Automatic Private IP Address." All the settings are the same as my other 2 computers, but I cannot get rid of the Private IP addy. If anyone can tell me how to change it I would appreciate it.

You should enter it here. This will make it static, also make sure to pick an IP out of the range of your DHCP area.

Are you using a switch or a router to share your internet connection? I know that many cable ISP's only allow one computer to access the internet. Some (such as TW RoadRunner in my area - Troy, NY) allow 3 computers, and thus a switch should work, but in most cases, one needs a router to share a cable internet connection among multiple PCs.

It sounds like the cable company is not giving you a DHCP address. How many are allowed on your account? Do you have to pay extra for additional addresses?

The 169.X.X.X addresses are used when no DHCP address has been received.

Check your account to see if you should be getting more addresses or put in a router. The router will allow you to have many addresses behind the device while only using one "outside" address.

Check your terms of service first, they may not allow you to add the router under your existing terms.
