Probably the most horrible RMA story I have ever heard...

Poor Kid.

Once upon a time there was a boy who loved video games. This boy bought an Xbox 360. Two years later it broke. The boy had no choice but to send it in for repairs. It was then that Microsoft decided to screw him over. A very big bend on over so we can give you the royal treatment sort of screwing. This is his story.

I think it was pretty dumb to send a custom box like this to a service center, but they really shouldn't have made promises they couldn't keep.

And what the hell is Microsoft using to clean up permanent marker like that??? That box looks new! (sarcasm.)

He should have just bit the bullet and got a new xbox. There's no way I would have sent in an Xbox with that many signatures and drawings on it. Display that somewhere in your room and get a new one.

His situation sucks though.

EDIT: What happen is that someone in MS RMA world has a checklist that tells them to clean the console up. They probably did just that - without knowing that it was supposed to stay the same. It's a miscommunication somewhere.

It is obvious someone was pretty butthurt about some of the sigs from this picture, and decided to be a vindictive prick.

LMAO @ "I would be displeased", "it is logical to conclude", etc.. That letter is way too long and obtuse for someone on the clock to read. He would have had a much better chance if he had just taped a large lettered, short and to the point sign on both sides of the console. Something like: "Valuable signatures: do not clean or replace casing!".

photo doesn't work. Cut and paste didn't work and drag and drop didn't work either.

"Permanent marker doesn't rub off easy."

That's a hell of an understatement. Permanent Marker requires a solvent to remove. Something alcohol-based at least. And even then it's not easy.

Let's be realistic here, do we really think someone went out of their way (and outside of normal procedure) to fuck up some kid's XBOX?

If it had sentimental value he shouldn't have sent it in. Yes it would have been nice if they'd read his letter and made sure that each and every person that handled it knew not to clean it. The odds of that actually happening? They see hundreds every day, if a little Sharpie made his special he should have held onto it.

seriously. something like the 360 RMA is a massive operation, and is certainly a very rigid and standardized procedure with tons of red tape. nobody in their right mind should trust them with something that requires special care, unless you can get some kind of legally binding guarantee in writing.

I doubt they went out of their way to do. Like LikeLinus said its probably one of the steps of repair.

There is no way in hell that the case he got back was the same one he sent in. I see circles that seem to indicate smudged permanent ink, but honestly - does anyone think someone went to the effort to clean off the guy's console? He got a new case with some smudges on it. They didn't go to the trouble of putting his old case around a different system. They should have done that, or they shouldn't have told him they were going to do it.

This really sucks byut the fault lies with the person who wiped off the ink, not Microsoft. What kind of an idiot would see that stuff on the case and just wipe it off?

It was a mistake though to write a long letter like that, which nobody is going to bother reading. He should have just taped a note on the case in very large letters saying "IMPORTANT: TAKE CARE WITH THE DRAWINGS AND SIGNATURES ON CASE", or something to that effect.

It was absolutely Microsoft's fault. No excuse for their actions.

That being said, come on. I mean there's no way in hell you should risk anything that has that much value (sentimental or otherwise) at a repair center like that.

Maybe wiping off ink and cleaning the 360 is a standard refurb procedure for repairs.
