Here's the situation. I have two NIC's in my server running windows 2k server. One nic is connected to the cable modem, the other is to another computer via crossover cable. I'm trying to share the internet connection to the second computer through the crossover. If I have my cable nic enabled, the two computers cannot see each other or ping each other. However, if I disable the nic that the cable modem is connected to, the two computers can see just fine. I am sure windows 2k server supports a computer with two NIC's, so I'm guessing my cable company has rigged it so that the cable nic can be the only nic in the computer, in order to keep people from doing what I am trying to do. Does anyone know any way to work around this? The help is *GREATLY* appreciated.

bump:

details of setup:

box 1:
NIC 1 - DHCP - Connected to cable modem
NIC 2 - 192.168.0.1 - DHCP/NAT server

box 2:
NIC 3 - DHCP - Connected to box1/nic 2

NIC 1 always works, box2/1 can only ping/connect to each other if NIC 1 is off.

I doubt that it is the doing of your ISP.

However, seems that CompUSA knew that you are in trouble, they have this Week Special item.

Belkin Cable/DSL Router for 49.99 (AMIR).

And it gets you to the 21st Century (Spidey07)

ya know what? About 3 months ago, I was running win2k server with RRAS and i was having issues with 2 NICs as well.

It seemed the NIC for my DSL would disconnect itself, and stop working after about 30 minutes. It wouldn't work again until I disabled the connection and reenabled it... and then it'd last another 30 minutes or so.

I've seen this problem elsewhere, someone posted a similar problem over at the HardForum.

I didn't try it with Win2k Pro, but its possible its a Win2k problem, or maybe just a Win2k Server problem.

LMK if you fix it.

One word of advice - Windows (and any device) has problems with you put in more than one default gateway. If you have multiple, it will try to load balance between them. When you setup your two NIC's, make sure that only the cable modem NIC has a default gateway setup - The other shouldn't.
