Problem burning to DVD-R using Memorex/Nero

I tried to record my first DVD-R with my Pioneer 104 DVD-R/-RW, Memorex-brand media, and Nero 5.5.9. I used the wizard and followed it step by step, filling a data cd with about 3.5gb of mp3s. It finished recording without any errors, and I went on to test the disc. Half the mp3s work, the other half do not. It seems all the ones from A thru M work perfectly, but the rest won't open, nor will they copy to the hdd. Oh and I burned using the DVD-ROM (ISO) option since that was the default. (Note: I've since burned three coasters, while trying different settings such as multisession enabled/disabled..all resulted in the same half-functional disc).

Anyone know what I did wrong? Or does Memorex media just stink? I've never liked their CD-Rs and since I couldn't find any Sony DVD-Rs, I thought I'd give them another shot. Also, Nero would only let me record at 1x. Any help would be appreciated - thanks!

Oh and is there another program I can use, other than Nero, that would allow me to make data cds?

Have you look over at Doom9.org, they have a lot of usefull information, don't know if they will have the answer you looking for but it's worth a try.

Try a Mitsui, Pioneer, Apple, or Maxell disc, with the same settings and then get back to us. Reports are that Memorex usually are OK, and better than the noname brand stuff usually, but not as good as the ones I've mentioned.

MP3s on a DVD. That must be a lot of music!

I burn mostly video DVDs, but I had a similar problem with my Pioneer 104 drive. Try using PIO mode in your ide configuration for that channel, it seems to work much better than UDMA. The burner only burns at 1X so this will not affect performance. I was having about a 35% failure rate before I switched to PIO. The media does make a difference, but usually not in the middle of the DVD. If it has any problems it usually shows up around the edges, so you start to lose information around the 90-95% area.

What are you using to read back your burned MP3s? are you playing them back in the burner or?

Although I love Nero, it does seem to have some problems burning DVDs for me. I have been using alternative burners (which will not work for data burning), and haven't had a coaster since. I have not used it to burn any data yet, though.

I got a DVD-RW that came with the burner that I use to test new configurations. It is much cheaper than burning a bunch of $2.00 coasters. Supposedly 5.5.9.2 is in the process of being rel;eased which will clear up some DVD concerns (supposedly).

I use Winamp to play back the mp3 files. I've tried double-clicking directly on the dvd (some work, some don't) and also copying the files the desktop (the ones that won't work won't even copy...some "invalid parameters" msg pops up). Do you think I should try burning an ISO/UDF disc? I've been using the default ISO but I noticed a lot of people over at Doom9 use the ISO/UDF option. I just don't want to waste any more discs..I ordered 4 3pks from buy.com and have already used up one. Would hate to bust open another one just to end up with the same result.
