I'm trying to install Windows XP on my AMD 1700+ computer. The problem I'm having is trying to re-install
the XP Windows to my hard drive. I have all the cd's for re-installing. I have the XP Windows Cd that came with the system and I have copies of the XP boot set-up floppies that I created. The problems is when I get to the portion of set-up when installation should occur I get get the following message. It says to put XP cd into D drive which on many occassions it already in the drive. Then it says in order for installation to continue XP has to copy the following file "asrm" to the system. In the drive itself, it shows the following D:\i386. It says I need to type the pathname where I want the file to go but it will not do anything - won't let me type anything in. Its almost like its not recognizing my copy of XP when it gets to this point. The only way I can get out of this configuration is to hit cancel. After hitting cancel, a message comes back stating operation has been cancelled by user. Then the system reboots again. What am I doing wrong? I have followed the direction for partitioning correctly. I thought I maybe able to format the c drive in order to wipe everything off the computer, but I can't get a dos prompt in order to do so. I was able to add the authentication key to installation, but that's as far as I get. How can I tell if I have an upgrade version of XP or a full version of XP since O/S was already on the computer when I got it. If its an upgrade version, that's where my problems may becoming from with the installation. Can that be a cause of my problems?

I tried that already, but when I get to the installation started portion. That's when I get the message to put the XP dics in the d drive and to the message that the "arsm" file need to be added. Please type the pathname. At the time, the d drive shows - D:\i386 and won't let me do anything. Any suggestions?

I found out the reason for my problem. The reformatted drive and OS was looking for extra drivers that I had hooked to the computers. I had connected the printer, exterior DVD, and the UPS. All used the USB ports. I had not installed the USB drivers therefore the computer was looking for them. You live and learn..now I know
