Basically, after the first portion of booting off of your cdrom drive, the 1st device is not required, since the files are then installed on the 2nd device after the reboot.

correct, but something is not set right bec. his harddrive isn't doing any booting of loaded setup files...

its a simple problem im sure, with a small detail overlooked

Btw, are you sure you plugged the IDE cable into the correct slot (don't know what happens when they are switched around)??

Sorry if my posts are hard to comprehend. I'm tired.. xP. Also, did you check the jumper settings on the HD?

Make sure that the power supply is hooked up to the HD too. (I'm stating minor things that we may have overlooked).

F*ck it. I'm going to bed. Will take it to the shop tomorrow. Don't have the time or energy to screw with it any longer. This will be the last system that I build. Too many things that can go wrong and cause problems for someone who doesn't do this everyday.

Thanks for the help, guys. I appreciate your time.

Get a good nights rest...you may be tired and frustrated and MAY HAVE overlooked something very simple. You dont sound like a noob.

I would start from scratch..this is a run down of what I do.

Run HD ribbon/round cable to IDE 1, make sure HD is set to master
Run CD-rom ribbon/round cable to IDE 2, make sure CD-rom is set to master
Fire up computer and go to BIOS screen. Change Boot seq. to only boot from CD-rom.
Disable all the rest.

I try not to load up computer with alot of additional cards at first...example: sound card, ethernet card, modems, tv card, etc.

I agree. Taking it to the shop will only create a larger empty space in your wallet... I recommend you get a good nights rest and dissassemble your PC tomorrow and build it again. Again, that's just me but if you are really fed up with it, just take it to a friend or if that isn't feasible, a shop.

Did you forget to make the Primary partition on the first HD bootable using FDISK? Sometimes I forget that step myself.

dont boot boot from the xp cd when it asks u to.

I attempted to force the system to boot from the HDD after it asked for a reboot, but it won't do it. It says something like " put boot disk in the boot drive and press any key"

Are you sure that the HDD is correct in the boot order in BIOS???

Did you take the CD out of the drive??

Huh? I've never had to do that with XP.

No, I intentionally avoided SATA drives so I wouldn't have any problems. So much for that.

Hmmm well I'm not sure. If you do find out anything on this please post to this thread the resolution, because our problems seem identical (despite me having a SATA)

i ran into this problem with my 400gb Hitachi SATA drive. make sure it is set to master(the HDD) and make sure the cable is working fine. Do you have an Upgrade cd or just standard. I normally am not good at working this out unless im there to actually do it but try those see if it helps

I've had a similar problem in the past and if memory serves me it seems that it turned out to be a bad HD. Can you slip another known good HD in there and try it? If it does the same thing then there is something wrong with your setup or MB.

OK, I took my new Samsung HDD out and put in an old Western Digital HDD. Windows XP installed flawlessly on the WD. For some reason, after the Samsung drive is formatted and the files are copied to it, it will not boot when the system restarts. Bad drive?

Yes, same cable.

Also, on the Samsung drive, I've tried the jumper setting on Master and CS. Neither works. The HDD is the only drive on the channel.

Man, if you only knew. This thing has caused me so much grief!

Now the question is this -- should I exchange the drive for another exact model or will I have the same problem again?
