Please help. my problem is in netwoking an xp and a 2000 machine. I see that each profile has its own "my documents" folder. I right clicked to share them but when trying to access them from the win2k machine I get told I have no permission. This is a simple home set up so there is no real login to the 2k machine and there are no passwords. they do have norton internet security setup as wall as the routers firewall. I thought that was the problem but i can can access the "shared folders" on the xp computer from the win2k computer.

I hope this was clear enough.
Thanks for your help.

why not create a directory "Common" and share it?
BTW, you have to enable the guest account on XP.

My work around was to create a folder in the shared folders called Bob2 and moved all of Bob's files there. I then put a shortcut in Bob' my documents folder pointing to Bob2 so he has to take an extras step to save his documents.

I came here to ask that too.

It seems that I can't access the My Documents folders of Program Files folders of any Windows XP Pro SP1a systems. I have 4 computers in my house. Two have Windows XP Pro, and two have Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 1a.

From the computers with SP1a, I can access the My Documents and Program Files of the XP Pro systems that do not have SP1a. It does NOT work the other way around though -- the non-SP1a systems cannot access the My Documents folders of the SP1a systems.

So, there's got to be a way to loosen the security like it was before SP1a was installed, because it worked then. I often need to access these folders, and it's annoying to have to run over to a computer, copy the file to another directory, run back to my computer, and then cut and paste the file(s) from that computer...

I had all sorts of problems with this when using my Win2k laptop to backup my XP Pro desktop before rebuilding it. Totally sucked. This was a home. I've vowed to never to work at a company that puts XP on the users' desktops. It's so anti-NT standard it's useless. I can understand its appeal for home users, but it doesn't seem corporate-friendly.

After some searching with google this is what I found but I haven't tried it yet.

Disable Simple File Sharing, which allows you to share those folders.
With XP Professional, you can permanently disable Simple File Sharing:
1. Open My Computer and click Tools | Folder Options | View.
2. Scroll to the end of the advanced settings.
3. Un-check "Use simple file sharing (recommended).
With XP Home Edition, you can temporarily disable Simple File Sharing
by starting up in "Safe Mode with Networking". See this web page for
details:
A Description of the Safe Mode Boot Options in Windows XP

With Simple File Sharing disabled, right click the desired folder,
click Sharing and Security, and share the folder. Then, click the
Permissions button to specify network access permissions, and click
the Security tab to specify NTFS file system permissions. A user
needs both types of permission in order to access the share. For
details of how to set permissions, see this web site:
Windows XP Professional File Sharing

I hope this works.
