Ciao.

Help,

I loaded Painkiller (Demo) and Secret Weapons Over Normandy and they either freeze up or play so slowly that it is vertually unplayable.

tried old and new drivers removing old drivers using ATI uninstaller.

I always disable secondary monitor for gaming.

TIA

Have you tried reinstalling the drivers? If so did you use driver cleaner?

Also try running with 1 monitor only and see if it makes a difference.

A 9600 (non-pro) isn't a powerhouse to begin with... try turning down some detail settings and make sure you have AA and AF at acceptable levels for that card (probably off or just 2X).

On a side note, your AthlonXP @ 2166 Mhz isn't 333x6.5, it's 166x13.

I agree with McArra ... lack of AGP drivers is a common explanation. Are they installed (your AGP drivers would from Nvidia for your NForce mobo). And have you verified that they are working (e.g. are you running 8X in smartgart under advanced display properties - not in the BIOS!). Some benchies would also help confirm eveything is setup correctly (e.g. 3DMark03).

Use driver cleaner after the unistall/restart. I had a problem like that, turned out I needed to run driver cleaner. Search google, there's a bunch of em.

If just reinstalling the drivers (even with a driver cleaner) doesn't help, try uninstalling both the graphics card and motherboard/chipset drivers, and then reinstalling your motherboard drivers, directX, and videocard drivers (in that order).

Most of which only have to be done because NVIDIA's drivers trash the system registry so badly.

Lol, OK Windows XP installs Nvidia drivers on a fresh install even though the card is an ATI.

You loaded them both up at the same time? Try the card in someonelse's computer and see what happens.

Check also if the video card conflicts with anything else, the audio card for example. Run msinfo32.exe, see status under IRQs, Conflicts, etc..
Hope this helps.

It's time for PC users to quit whining about poor tech support. It's poor because WE made it that way by continually insisting on the lowest prices and not buying products that costed more but had superior technical support. Us old-timers (PC users since the early 80's) know this because we saw the industry go from full tech-support to almost no tech support in less than 15 years.

In any case, I believe you are also very unrealistic about your expectations of tech support. How can you possibly expect somebody to troubleshoot your particular problem -- a piece of tweak software that only you knew was installed causing the problem? How on earth do you expect a company to troubleshoot every piece of unsupported (and unrecommended) hack software? It would take hours to go through everything installed on your system, and even then it would be difficult. Considering it probably costs a company $50 or more per hour of tech support, and they probably only made a $30-50 profit on the sale of that card to you, they would go out of business so fast it would make your head spin.

So quit whining and accept that no one is gonna hold your hand when you have non-defect problems with your PC components. Your best resource is always gonna be these user communities. Heck, I haven't called tech support for any PC product since 1987.

LOL, the fact that you:
a) buy Dell
b) call their tech support and think it's "excellent"
automatically invalidates any statement you could ever possibly make regarding computers.
BTW, go read up on netiquette. Using eleventy-billion exclamation marks does *NOT* help get your point across, nor does typing in all capital letters

In other words: STFU!

I have built more than twelve custom computers in the past three years. In that time I have never had to call a tech support rep concerning those machines except for the above mentionned case, the ATI card.

The reason that I have a Dell Latitude D800 is that the company I work for neccessitates me to have it. On two occassions I had to call their tech support and it took me , on average about 5 min. to get through and they were able to help or find me help each time!

So whats your story asshole.

Actually, I am interested in buying an ATI 9600XT and wanted to see what kind of problems people are having with it -- that's what brought me to this thread. I simply became a bit annoyed at his "ATI customer service SSUUUCCKKKS" statement and was commenting on his attitude. There was really no condescension involved -- just a little biotch slappin'.

In any case, I guarantee you that Dell customer support would not have solved his problem with anything short of a "....do a complete Windows reinstall and see if that works..." type of answer. To state that ATI sucks because they couldn't figure his ridiculously obscure problem out is just asinine.

Anyway Pauli, what it really boils down to is that the Radeon 9600XT is a great budget/performermance card and once I solved my problem the card rocks.

Cheers
