hi all. geez, my first post and it happens to be a problem.

anyway, i upgraded my pc from win98 to win2k yesterday and it seems like everything went fine, with the exception of the monitor going to standby when the pc turns on. i then have to reboot and open it up in safe mode so i can at least see something on the screen and try to resolve it from there. as far as hardware, everything is compatible but when i load the latest driver for the vid card, the monitor goes back to standby when opening the pc in regular mode. as far as i can tell, i've already updated the current drivers.

does anyone have any idea what i could try??? also, do you think i might have less problems if i do a clean install or would the same problem show up then as well?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

i'm sorry. the vid card is a Wallace FPD 16-MB TNT-2 Graphics Card R3 and the monitor is for a gateway lcd, model number fpd1500. i tried downloading the driver from both the nvidia site and gateways site but to no avail... bios has been updated along with everything else. do you think i should start a clean install or should i try tinkering around with it?

You tried "downloading the drivers" as in "you weren't able to download the drivers" or "they didn't work when you installed them"? Anyway, with an upgrade from 98 to 2k I would have done a clean install, I've experienced far less problems (I have tried it both ways before).

good luck!

I would highly recommend that you backup your important data and do a clean install of win2k. I have tried both ways on numerous machines, and I have always found a clean install to be the least hassle.

check the device manager to see which versions of drivers are currently installed. Control Panel -> system -> hardware tab -> device manager. Just to make sure that they were installed properly. You will be able to discover any other hardware conflicts by checking in here as well.

If you are completely at a loss, save yourself the stress and do a clean install

Did this problem arise AFTER you updated the video card drivers or after the win2k upgrade process was completed? If the problem existed even BEFORE you attempted to install the latest drivers, then it sounds more like a bios issue than a video driver issue. Make sure you have updated the motherboard's bios to the latest.

I don't think a clean re-install will help you fix your problem. I think that the issue is that W2K defaults to "optimal" refresh-rate settings for your display device, whereas Win9x usually defaulted to "adaptor default", which was usually 60Hz. Now, you mentioned using an LCD display panel for a monitor. From what I've read, most run at 60Hz or so. So it looks like what you need to do is set you refresh rate low enough (60Hz) so that the LCD doesn't go into standby. Another possiblity, is that the polarity of the vsync/hsync signals is such that it is triggering the LCD panel to go into standby mode, as some DPMS-capable monitors do. To fix that, either use mfg driver-supported sync-polarity settings (I know ATI and Matrox allow this), or use something such as Powerstrip to change them.

Reformat your entire system and do a fresh installation of Windows2000. It is simply a terrible idea to upgrade from Win9x to Windows2000. This is because their cores are totally different as are many other things about the two operating systems. Trust me, do a clean installation.
