Problem using 3 sticks of DDR SDRAM

I have 3 sticks of 256 MB PC2100 Crucial memory. If I use all three sticks at once, I get all sorts of random lockups and reboots, the computer is virtually unusable. If I take one out, it works fine. I've tried this on two different MBs, Abit KR7A-RAID and Soyo Dragon+ with the same results. Any ideas?

A lot of motherboards require buffered RAM when you use more than two sticks.
Sometimes it works anyway, but this seems to be your problem....

Get the MemTest86 utility at mushkin.com, and test your memory sticks, one at a time. Maybe you have a faulty one.

Don't know about that Abit, but the Soyo Dragon+ has problems with 3 sticks of RAM. The latest BIOS is purported to fix this, but I can't get my 3rd stick of crucial to work stably with it.

I've read alot of things that say with the Abit board that you can't run more than 2 sticks in total of over 512Megs on their ddr boards, if you do, then you need to use registered ram. I don't know if any of this is true cause I only have 2 sticks of 256Megs each and not an Abit board(almost bought the KR7a-Raid). Also, most boards that say they will take up to say 3gigs of ram have to be registered or 2gigs unregistered too. How much ram are we talking about here?

EDIT: Ok, I see you say 3 x 256Megs. Hmm maybe it's the problem there with more than 512Megs and 2 sticks. Contact Abit.

Yes this was a problem on a couple of boards, especially the Soyo Dragon +

I'm running 3 sticksx256 of Crucial 2100 (145fsb) on my Dragon + and I got lockups at 1T command rate. See what yours is set to, and change it to 2T. That may clear up some of the lockups. The other problem may be 4 bank interleave (weave, whatever, i can never remember which it is ). set it to disabled. That should clear up any lockups. Just changing it to 2T eliminated all mine. This is with the older BIOS too (the newer one that supposedly fixed the problem caused other problems for folks so I held off). All other ram settings are set at the max except for command rate.
