I was sent an email with a small video as an MPG attachment.. but I don't get any video in windows media player. It just tried to treat it as an audio file. I don't think it uses a funky codec or anything. Any ideas? Running Media Player 9 on XP.

Typically, you don't have the correct codec installed if all you get is audio only. Are you sure that it's a .mpg file?

You have to get Gspot. It is FREE.

?? Identifies download induced problems (truncated files, "cooked" files, etc.)
?? Shows framerate, duration, aspect ratio, bitrates, AVI structure info, and more.
?? Displays and allows editing of RIFF info (title, etc); displays "hidden" ASCII info.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

?? Drag and Drop and "Send To" support, multi-file (batch) processing support
?? Copy/Paste or text export GSpot information - format is user configurable.
?? Built-in database of 350 video and 150 audio codec types

It's not necessarily a video. The Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) not only created a video format, but also audio to go with it. There were three different audio compression techniques. Layer-1, Layer-2, and Layer-3 (also known as MP3) Layer 1 and 2 are the only ones that are certified for use with mpg videos.
.mpg files are program streams for multiplexing audio and video together, but they don't always have both streams in it. There can be video without audio, and vice-versa.
There are 2 things you can try.
1) Test to see if it is a multiplexed "program stream"- Open in winamp. If it sounds like a bunch of seemingly garbled digital data, it's a multiplexed file. If it sounds like the soundtrack you were hearing before, then check the file info section. That'll give you all the file info you need. (This means there is no video.)

2) If it is multiplexed (see #1 to check), Use Virtual Dub. Once you open it in there, goto File=>File Information..., that should tell you anything you need about the formats and codecs needed. Virtual Dub can be found at www.virtualdub.org. If this is the case, then the other links might help you more.

Well, still can't get it to play but according to Gspot it is an ATI VCR1 codec. I downloaded that, still didn't work

It does yes but I prefer the xvid codec from Koepi... you can set FFDshow to use the xvid codec if its present.
