Ok, I took out the mboard, and it powered on and everything. Now, I put it all back into the case and the comp doesn't power on at all. What do I do? I'm guessing it's a short somewhere or something but how do you remedy something like that? I'm so confused!

EDIT:: Diddnt look at pics. Sorry. and no the one with the 2 rows of 6 connectors shouldnt be needed.

EDIT2: "PS, is that an aspire x-dreamer? "

hehe i can tell that to. That powersupply is the same one i have in my computer

Plus you can see the Temp Probe, and Front Them/LED Power Plug.

Check your connections again. Unplug your floppy drive and all drives's power source, check the seating on all of your pci/agp devices, and try to boot check the seating on the ram. If it doesnt boot then take the motherboard out and use only cpu/video card/ram and see if it will boot, unplug all front panel connectors and short the two power button pins to start pc. Try the floppy drive connector first and clear cmos, then start.

Yep, It's an Aspire X Dreamer II, the PS is turned on. I'll try what you suggested, Steven, and post back. Thanks!

EDIT: what did you mean.."short the two power button pis to start pc"?

well instead of having your front panel connectors connected [as they are probably too short to reach the motherboard if you have to take it out of the case] you can get a small scredriver and touch it to the + and - pins where you plug in your power switch lead to start the mother board, it works the same as the switch. you dont have to have led's/reset switch etc connected to boot the pc. sounds like you are getting power to your motherboard or the led on the board would not be lit, and that you have a short or a bad connection somewhere. I mention the floppy power based on my own personal experiences, as that is the one connection that i have gotten wrong in the past that kept the machine form starting.

Type o on the pis should be pins.

Try disconnecting everything but what you absolutely need for it to power on/boot.

So, the motherboard will have the CPU in, RAM, and video card and be connected to the PSU. Double check the wires going to the front of the case or short the power button pins like someone said above.

I disconnected all cables except the PS to Mboard wires, and have only the RAM, vid card, CPU connected to the mboard. Touched the power button pins on the mboard w/a screwdriver & flipped the switch on the PS -- nothing happened except a quick flash of an LED light in mboard's integrated "S/PDIF out" black unit. Any ideas?

Is the motherboard out of the case? If so do you have another video card to ry in it ? Is the CMOS jumper placed right on the mother board? Are ther any jumpers that require specific settings?

Ok, I took out the mboard, and it powered on and everything. Now, I put it all back into the case and the comp does power on using the front case switch, but it won't power off using that switch. Also, the monitor doesn't show anything when it's powered on? Just keeps saying "monitor is in power save mode, activate using PC"..is it a prob. w/the vid card?

Thanks for all the help so far!

Is the board mounted on standoffs like it should be? Check that there is precisely one standoff for each screwhole in the motherboard, no more, no less. A detailed listing of your hardware would be helpful too.

One problem I ran into when I was building a PC about a year ago was that I forgot to put the seperator pins into the case to keep the motherboard from being bolted straight onto the metal. This caused my motherboard to short out completely and it stopped running either in or out of the case. The symptoms it showed were very similar to those you just described.

Mech, they are on the standoffs, but I'm not using screws/standoffs in all the holes on the mboard b/c they don't all line up w/the holes on the case's mboard tray. Here's what the comp is composed of:
Aspire Dreamer II Case w/350W PSU
AMD 2500+ Unlocked Barton Core Retail CPU (bought used)
Abit NF-7 mboard *bought used)
Crucial 512MB 3CL PC3200 DDR RAM (1 stick, new)
Radeon 7000 32MB DDR AGP vid card (bought used)
WD 80GB 8MB HD (new)
48X CD-rw drive (from old comp)
16X DVD Rom drive (new)

Another thing I noticed is when I turn on the comp, the drives don't open/close when I press the eject buttons :-/

Ok, but there aren't any standoffs under the board that don't have a corresponding screwhole in the motherboard, correct? You wouldn't want a standoff touching the underside of the board where it has no hole.

Looking at your hardware... if your WD hard drive is the only drive on its IDE cable, then make sure it's jumpered to its Single Drive setting, which I believe means removing the jumper cap from the pins entirely. If that doesn't get you anywhere, try leaving the board and components in the case but disconnect the drives from power and data cables and see if that changes anything. If the board now displays its POST screen, try adding each drive by itself and see if one of them causes a problem.

Mech..there aren't any standoffs that are under the board which don't have a screw hole.

Right now, I have nothing connected to the mboard except the essentials and did set the HD as the single drive b/c it's on it's own IDE cable.

Edited first post to reflect new prob..I really appreciate all the help I've gotten so far!
