I have this annoying problem. When I just leave windows 2000 to do its thing, being on, it sometimes just reboots.
Here is a clip from the event viewer:
"Event Type: Information
Event Source: Save Dump
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1001
Date: 9/2/2000
Time: 10:48:45 AM
User: *withheld*
Computer: *withheld*
Description:
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000001e (0xc0000005, 0x804687b9, 0x00000001, 0x0000011c). Microsoft Windows 2000 [v15.2195]. A dump was saved in: C:\WINNT\Minidump\Mini090200-01.dmp. "

OS gurus, please help me track down the cause of this. Reply with what info you need and I will post it up.

I wish I could tell you what the answer to this is, because I've been seeing the same thing over the past week or so, and the funny thing is, it seemed to start around the time I loaded SP1, I'm really wondering if that's the culprit. I'm doing a full reload now, sans SP1, to see how it behaves.

i've had this happen 2-3 times also and i think it has only been since sp1, but i'm not positibe. no clue as to why or any pattern to it. perhaps its hardware related? here's my system:

msi ms-6309 mobo (via chipset) w/ latest bios (hmmm....)
p3-600 o/c to 800 (always runs nice and cool; no issues known with it)
128M pc133 kingston value ram (infeneon chips i seem to recall)
creative annihilator 2
diamond mx300
dlink pci nic (home lan)
cnet pci nic (dsl)
toshiba 12x dvd-rom
plex 12/10/32a cd-rw
ms intellimouse explorer (plugged into usb port)
ms nat keyb pro (usb and ps/2 connected)

lets see if we have any commmon hardware that may be an issue. my wife's pc (bh6 w/ cele366@550) w/ win2k and sp1 hasn't done this once. could ie5.5 be an issue? that's the only diff OS-wise between my 2 systems...

p.s. i don't have that entry in my event viewer though.

If you think its hardware, here is my system setup:

Pentium III 800EB w/ Golden Orb (this is running a bit hotter than i would like, 30C idle... around 50-55C running Diablo 2)
256 Megs of Crucial ECC running at CAS2
694D Pro MSI Motherboard (running BIOS 1.3, not the latest)
Windows 2000 SP1, not running 5.5
Toshiba 12x dvd-rom
Dlink 10/100 LAN Card
Some crappy 4 meg PCI video (soon to be Radeon All in Wonder when the darn thing comes out)

... question, is it your wife's computer that runs 5.5? And that setup isn't running into reboot problems?
If so, I might try using IE 5.5, although I have used it before and find no use in it.

Strange, but I'm getting the same problem! I get random reboots once or twice a day with Win2k only!

Here's my hardware specs:

Celeron 366@550
VIA Apollo Pro 133
192MB PC100 RAM
CLAP GeForce
3Com USR 56k Modem
WinTV model 401
Monster Sound MX300
Logitech Optical Wheel Mouse

Mine has been doing the same type of thing and I am convinced that it is a heat related problem....

Tyan S1833DL Tiger 100
PIII700e@933
128MB Crucial PC133 CAS2
ATI Rage Fury
SBLive
Philips 5x DVD
Quantum 30GB 7200rpm
Intel Pro/100B NIC
W2k w/ SP1
IE 5.5

They cut the AC off in the building at about 6pm every day. Soon thereafter, it dumps. It has been doing this before SP1 and IE5.5

mike,

yours definitely sounds like a heat issue. but in my case, pc alert tells me the hottest my cpu gets is a tad over 90F (and the chassis temp is lagging behind that a few degrees) which sounds okay to me - perhaps its another chip on the mobo that is over-temping? i have 2 case fans in additon to the power supply fan, and i'm not O/Cing the GF2 so i don't see how heat would be a problem. but i'll check it out.

Highest I have ever seen the processor hit was 107F running RC5/OGR full tilt. The highest I have seen the mobo hit was about 96F. The northbridge gets a little toasty to the touch, so I wonder if I need to cool that thing down a little bit.

I have 4 80mm case fans going, 2in, 2out. They have helped a bit, but I think the fact that the room temp has probably been hitting 88-90 with the AC off has not been helping.

Mike and everyone,
I do think its a heat isssue. Usually I run Seti@Home Screen saver when I leave my computer. But recently I turned off the thing and my computer hasn't crashed in a day, now close to two days...
If anyone else can confirm that the event 1001 error can be caused by heat, or hardware, please reply to this thread.

I haven't had any issues what so ever with Win2k....i've got a P III 500mhz with GeForce2 GTS and AUREAL sound card. Your issues are most likely realated to some software that you all have installed.

It's the stable os i've ever used. I use it for gaming and hosting my ftp site. I haven't rebboted in 8 days. I'ts all about maintence

Sendtrash,

If I leave RC5/OGR stopped overnight, the machine is still running in the morning when I come in.

What kind of Sound card do you have in your rig? I was reading another thread on the SBlive getting so hot it could cause reboots. I need to check mine out to see how hot it is running.

Does anybody know a good place to pick up BX chipset heatsinks? I would really love it if I could find one that is really low profile and with a fan on it.

While it could be heat related, in my case I don't think it was. I also noticed someone had mentioned VIA, well my board is a BP6, which is BX... at any rate my BSOD's had began to get so irritating that I was finally left with no choice but to reload, and this time did NOT install SP1 and I haven't seen that problem since...

Just a thought

[Sarcasm]Does anyone see a pattern here?[/Sarcasm]

everyone who is complaining about random reboots is overclocking their CPU. Try returning it to the stock speed and see if that fixes the problem. It's possible that you are running on the very edge of stability. It is possible to have an unstable overclocked CPU even if the temperature never gets very high.

a classic NT stop you have there.. you have an access violation. some driver tried to touch an area of memory where it did not have permission to go.

The Second number# after the ( is the address where the error occured.
you need a file called pstat.exe which is in the resource kit. pstat will show what programs where running at the time of the crash. with this number "0x804687b9" you will cross reference with the output of pstat.exe.
have you installed an older ASPI layer in win2k? did you install the VIA bus master drivers?
if so, take them out and go with the win2k default bus master drivers. i say take out the ASPI layer FIRST if you installed it or install a newer version.

Thank yazz for deciphering the message. If it could be the drivers, I will check. Do you know where I can get pstat.exe? Does someone here have a resource kit that was mentioned? It is possible to just view the dump file in a txt?.... I hope someone can provide a link to download pstat.exe
Thanks

..**Added** i read the microsoft link you provided. what would be more helpful is finding the dumpchk.exe program. That woudl allow me to read my dump file.... anyne happen to have service pack 3 disc on hand?

I was getting a similar message a while back. I would be using my box and all the sudden... reboot, no warning nothing. What I thought caused it was putting a FC PIII 733 in a 810e board. Replacing the CPU with a Celeron 400 fixed the reboot problem. But now I have the same CPU in a 815e board and all is good. It ended up being a combo of 810e w/733@133 bus with 100MHz SDRAM. Although this config is supported by the manufacturer it does not work very well with Win2000.

Hope that helps.

I get reboots just by typing "www" in the IE window. Dont even ask me what happened when I loaded SP1.

I get this error when I do a shutdown... with a via chip (AMD K63 400 not overclocked)...

Humm... it's quite annoying.
