Well my firend has an old emachines Sockect A rig and the fan in the PSU died. So he put a full floor fan behind it and let it run, (Dosent know much about PCs, as if you couldnt tell). I hear about this about 1 month into this because he complains his PC shuts down every 10-15 mintues. I go over replace the PSU with the only thing i had on hand and thought the problem fixed. The PSU I replaced it with is a year old rosewill 450watt. Not the best PSU, to say the least, but I figure it should do the trick since The system cant draw that much power anyway and thePSU has never had a problem. Booted it up, ran stable for an hour and I left.
About a week later he says the PC wont turn on. According to him his sister was on it for 4 hours and then when he booted it up that night; nothing. So I went over there and sure enough when I hit the power button the fans spin for 2-3 seconds and stop. I immediately thought it was the PSU. I (removed the CPU and truned it on without it so just the PSU powered on through the mobo, If that makes sense somehow. I figure I couldnt do more damage anyway so I tried it isgust and the PSU fans spun fine. When I put the CPU back in it stoped again.
I got a new duron to replace the current one and gave it to him. He said he installed it but the same thing is happening. Im going over there monday to check it out.
So here are a few questions:
Is the PSU too powerful for the CPU?
Could it be a fault in the Mobo causeing the power transfer to stop at the CPU?
Did he install the heatsink wrong and burn it without knowing, bringing us back to step one?
Anyone have any ideas/suggestions?
