When the computer is turned on or restarted scandisk always pops up saying the computer was not shut down properly (which it was shut down correctly). The scandisk (thorough) takes around 5 hours and when completed loads fine...bu the problem keeps coming back after each scan. If I cancel out of the scan winME loads up fine but the scandisk prob is annoying and I can see a definite decrease in hdd performance (slow) and cannot run a defrag till the thorough scandisk has been completed. I have tried using selective startup and things of that nature but nothing works. Any ideas?

ehh I ran diskkeeper and after that windows stop working!!!!

now when I goto boot it up it just stalls at the winME screen for an hour then comes up with the error to reinstall windows!!!!!!

It won't even go into safe mode

Sorry, gotta be cruel and lock this.....this is a software problem.

Maybe your hard drive is going bad...did you check that out?
You might want to try running scandisk from dos

You have two glaring problems to begin with:
1. Compaq
2. WinME

Now that I've said what everyone is thinking, let's get down to it.

You are lucky, my friend. WinME crashed on you and now you can install Win98 which will be much faster and a lot less buggy. You can go for Win2k/XP but you may have problems with hardware.

Format and install, install, install...............................

If you can boot to the command prompt, you may want to use the scanreg command to restore your registry to a previously known good configuration. As far as the scandisk is concerned, you can turn off the "run scandisk after bad shutdown" in the advanced section of the system configuration utility (msconfig). You can also use a tool "TweakUI" to disable auto-scandisk. Best of luck.
