How is your SATA cable, and did you install the firmware update to correct problems with dropping queued commands? However I doubt the firmware is at fault.

I was thinking of reseating the cable at both ends.

I didn't know more than one firmware update was needed for any version of the Samsung HD204UI.

I substitute a new cable and the same problem does not change.

Taken from another forum:
Current Pending Sector = ACTIVE VISIBLE bad sectors that CANNOT BE READ but are still visible to the operating system.
Writing to this sector will solve the problem; if there was physical damage it will be realloacted by a reserve sector and the Reallocated Sector Count raw value will increase.
So you have a few sectors that cannot be read. Use a disk utility to check and mark bad sectors. You system probably freezes when trying to read them.

[PS] if that counter increases any further, backup your data.

You are a lot braver than I am. I would backup data immediately and full then HD from my system. There's no way I would trust a HD when sectors going bad in use. (I am OK with bad sectors mapped out at factory).

Get a new HD, and make backups of the current one if possible.
When you have the data copied over, then, you can format the old HD again, and use it as a scratch drive, until it finally dies out.

HGST or WD are good, but, remember, ALL HDs will fail, so, always make backups of important data.

When it comes to WD drives black, blue, green versions. They have a slight performance difference. Maybe this will help you pick which drive is best for your needs.

Black has the best performance, but are also the loudest and most power hungry.

Green has the lowest performance, but is also the quietest and least power hungry.

Blue is the sweet spot between performance and resource management.

In all seriousness though, the SMART data doesn't look bad. It shows some possible pending reallocated sectors, but no actual reallocated sectors.

I'd first backup the data 100% and then try running some further diagnostics and/or benchmarks on the drive. It could have slow reading sectors, which aren't bad yet, but likely will become bad very soon or even a weak read/write head.

Bad hard drives are like bad meat. When in doubt, throw it out.

Hey, you could be on to something here...they could release an obnoxious gas when they are about to die.

Then we can have threads about 'why does my HD stink', or 'My computer smells like an outhouse'.
