Problem with HDD. HELP!! :-/

My friend's external 200gb HDD was not working, so he gave it to me to play with. I removed it from the enclosure, and it shows up when I put it in my system. I ran Western Digital Diagnostics, and it said there are no errors

As a result, I went to try to format the drive, and load WinXP on it (he does not care for the data, he just wants a working drive). So XP copied its files over, and then rebooted my machine. I got one long Beep from my computer's speaker, and the HDD did not load.

As a result, I tried to format it with a Win98 Startup disk. It is currently working, but it only shows the drive as 60GB. Any ideas if this can be solved, or is this drive toast?

First off you shouldn't have to use a windows 98 startup disk for formatting a hard drive going into a XP machine.

You cannot install XP on one machine and then move the hard drive to another machine and expect it to work.

Boot from the xp cd and try partitioning it there. Delete the existing partition and create a new one to see what size it will be.

Windows 98 won't recognize your drive because it's too big. Try formatting with XP again.

I just got it to format with XP. It is now showing that I have about 137 gigs. When I formatted it with the 98 boot disk, it showed about 60gigs. I'm wondering if the extra 60gigs is now "lost" or something.

Dell Dimension 4500
P4- 1.8
512 RAM

You will need at least SP1 for the drive to be recognised as 200gig.
Sometimes, SP2 is required

Requirements for support of 48-bit LBA (Exceeding 137Gb HDD size limit):

Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 or better or XP with Service Pack 1 or better

or

You must enable the support in the Windows registry:

Enable 48bit LBA support for ATAPI in W2K:

AND

Your mobo must support 48bit LBA (Large Block Addressing) - check the manufacturer's website for BIOS updates

OR

Install latest Motherboard Chipset Driver patch (in some cases - particularly Intel P4 mobos)

Install an add-on 48bit LBA capable controller card.

Does he actualy want to run windows from the drive? If not, why not put it in your PC as a slave. If you have SP1 or SP2 installed, you'll be able to partition and format the drive from within windows, and it will have it's full size recognized...
