For example I have fileA and fileB
(fileA and fileB was the files that I created before with data on it. Not a new files!) <- just add this on 22 Nov

When I open fileA then Minimize it to the Taskbar

And I open fileB ..... Why fileA is restore to the previous position, instead of staying in the Taskbar ?

I want fileA to stay in the Taskbar like any other software does! (eg MS Word)
Are there anyway to change it in the Options ?

Thank You

I don't think it's a 2016-specific problem.

I've noticed it on 2013 at my work desktop. I wonder if it's a symptom of low-memory? I don't get that on my desktop at home, which has 16GB RAM vs the 4GB I have at work.

Because it opens fileB in the same window as fileA is already opened in... what you are seeing minimized on the taskbar is Excel itself, not necessarily the file.

It's all the same symptom with all other version of Microsoft Excel.

No it's not symptom of low memery! (I have 6 GB of RAM)

Not necessarily. You can have files either open in the same window of Excel, like Photoshop with multiple files open... or you can have multiple full instances of Excel with one file per true excel Window.

It's been a while since I've used Excel and that was version 2003. I do remember that you could use a combination of keystrokes to switch between sheets. It may have been Alt-Tab or Control-Tab. That's not what you asked for, but maybe what you might need.

Excel stopped that functionality with 2013. Now all new sheets open with a new window. It looks like a completely new instance of Excel but it isn't. You can still open a separate instance of Excel though if you need to.

I know that because I do it what I assume is the wrong long way. I have two monitors and only use excel maybe once every month or so but when I use it I am typically need to wor5k with two files at the same time. I bet there is an easy way to open a second window from the first;

I currently open one window; then open a blank window using the open you get by right clicking on the icon, then in the new blank window I open the file I also want. Sad thing as I can't move a colum to the other instqnce of excel except by cutting and pasting or copying and pasting.

Is there a simplier way to open a second instance of Excel?

I'm on '10, so I don't know the differences with the newer versions. The only way I can get separate windows in Excel is opening 2+ instances of Excel from the Start menu, then opening the file(s) in the separate windows. Took me a while to figure that out... doh.

akkha - I have 2013 Excel and Windows 7 BUT ther're three things you can try. The first two are mentioned above; If Microshaft broke Excel then a good reason not to upgrade, if they broke Win 10 then a good reason to consider staying with 7 for now.

The one problem I have with all previous encarnations is the opposite; I often want one instance so Excel will allow me to move a column to another opened file. Fine if you run it the way you're not happy with but annoying if you collect stuff off the web; Export to Microsoft Excel and then combine in other versions didn't allow you to have one instance.

If Export to Microsoft Excel is still an option in Win 10 try that twice; takes for ever but it was the first way I learned to open two instances of Excel. I kept hacking (Old school term for experimenting, not the current terminnogy) and found methods above but Microshaft saying"There is no option to change this behavior of Excel" may not mean there isn't a way to get more than one instance if you mess around and try undocemented stuff.

I know how to start a new instance of Excel.
But I have no problem with one instance or two instance!

I just want fileA to stay in the Taskbar while I open fileB
(fileA and fileB was the files that I created before with data on it. Not a new file!)

I use office 2010 pro plus and office 365 which has office 2016 programs and excel does the same thing for me. Word will allow multiple instances on screen at the same time but excel doesn't. I can preview multiple windows in the task bar but I cannot place open worksheets side by side to view them. I don't see anything in the options menu governing the preview feature. You might try asking in the excel help forum where advanced users are available. http://www.excelforum.com/
