Problem with my GIGABYTE GA-965G-DS3

GIGABYTE GA-965G-DS3 rev3.3
I love this motherboard!...Too bad it's in my friends new computer.

It was easy to set up, looks like some very simple OC, and pretty colors.

Only we have an issue with the SCSI + Raid controller driver.
The gigabyte Driver on their driver disk, messes up the IDE, and the corresponding DVDRW.(LGSuper-Multi DVD Burner, GSA-H42N-BK)
CDs and DVDs will all read, but not write, and a blank disk won't even be recognized.

After some googling, I found a couple people mentioning the problem, but only one had a solution...
Change the Gigabyte Raid controller driver to "standard dual IDE" driver.

well now the DVDRW will recognize blank DVDs, etc. ... but I still can't burn with it.
I can't use windows drag and drop burn, or Nero to recognize it as more than a -Ram with either driver.

With the Gigabyte Raid driver, I get "Format Unsupported"
and the DVDRW is listed in Hardware as a SCSI.
With the Standard Dual IDE driver, I get "Windows experienced a problem...Retry, Continue, Abort" that never works
here the DVDRW is listed as it should be.

Any Suggestions? I want this computer I built for him to be perfect...
-

----P.S.-----
Did anyone else get a horrific BIG circle "GIGABYTE" sticker slapped across the top of all three PCI slots? With nice and Über sticky paper, that didn't like to come off?
He has shreds of paper on the middle PCI slot, and I would like to get it off. any suggestions at this part of the board too?:Q

There's a few posts in the DS3 official thread about this. Basically you have two chioces:

1. don't use sata ahci or raid mode
- put your sata drives on the yellow intel sata ports
- don't enable AHCI (for f10 only)
- don't enable AHCI for on board sata devices (this controls the purple gigabyte ports)
- setup windows normally (DO NOT install the sata driver from gigabyte) and your computer will work

2. use AHCI/RAID
- put your sata HD on purple gigabyte ports (JMICRON controller)
- you will need to install the sata driver from gigabyte or from jmicron: download from gigabyte.com.tw. Use the 1.17*** version although 1.14 will work also.
- the catch here is that you are supposed to do this when installing windows. i.e. press the f6 button and load the driver with floppy. You might get this to work without reinstalling but I won't go into that... check the ds3 official thread for my previous post.
- if you do the above, then you will see that your HD is now a SATA device and Your IDE drives will operate independently as normal.

Note: you cannot put the HD on purple gigabyte port AND still run it in IDE only mode. This is because Jmicron has issues with you operating the sata ports and IDE ports as IDE.

I was hoping to not have to reinstall Windows to fix this.... no luck.

Installing SATA/Raid Controllers drivers from the Gigabyte disk was 1.14
Installing the setup from Jmicron, was 1.17
HDD in the Purple Gigabyte SATA, and DVDRW on IDE Master
Changing Bios to:

SATA AHCI Mode :: AHCI
Onboard SATA/IDE Device :: Enabled
Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode :: AHCI and then trying RAID/IDE

enabling AHCI also brought up a ! unknown device in "Other PCI devices" in device manager.

Putting HDD in the Yellow SATA/IDE, Uninstalling the Gigabyte Driver, disabling AHCI and even the Gigabyte SATA all together
usually ended up in the DVDrw disappearing from the Bios ... and messing with Bios Settings also would end up not recognizing the HDD and/or DVDrw

I suppose this means with my current knowledge, I cannot fix this without re-installing windows.
So, can you do me a favor and copy and paste your previous response in the DS3 official thread?? It's 85 pages long.
Also, do I have to worry about this problem with all SATA Raid controllers on current Motherboards? is Jmicron the only raid controller being used? Or does Asus or Biostar have an easier to use one?
My dad wants me to build a cheaper computer, and I would rather not have this issue again.

This is already posted in the DS3 thread but here it is FYI-

I just got my 965P-DS3 (rev 3.3) from Newegg installed yesterday and spent several hours setting it up and loading Vista 32. For those of you that are having problems with a tick in device manager on the jmicron sata controller as well as unstable and glitchy perfomance, I have a possible solution.

As always for a fresh install, I downloaded the most current drivers from the gigabyte website before the Vista Installation. All drivers went in fine except the SATA2 Raid windows drivers on gigabytes website- " motherboard_driver_sata_gb_sata2raid.exe ". They would freeze during install about a third of the way thru and lock the system. I tried reinstalling windows, downloaded the drivers three times before I noticed that they say it's a 3.01 MB file and the file i was downloading was only 2.37 mb?? There are 4 sites to choose from- 1. Asia, 2. Asia(China), 3. America, 4. Europe. Strangely, the Asia and Europe files are 3.0 mb and the Asia (China) and America links are only 2.37 mb? I tried the driver download from Europe and they installed without a glitch and solved my jmicron tick as well.

I also had a lesser problem loading the sata install drivers during windows installation but was finally able to get raid set up using these drivers, this fellow over at TH"extracted" from a windows update. If you aren't getting raid working during install, you might try these- jmicron Raid Drivers. Many thanks to Zorglub38 at TH for putting these out there for me to find!

Hope any of this helps just one of ya!

Just to be clear, inside my computer is:
1 Seagate SATA 3.0Mb/s 320Gb HDD
1 LG IDE Multicombo DVDRW
Motherboard GIGABYTE GA-965-DS3(not g, not p) rev 3.3 bios 10(i am pretty sure)
Thats it.

The Settings are:
HDD on 1st Purple (IDE 5 Master in Bios)
DVD on IDE on IDE Cable and jumper set to Master(IDE 4 Master)
This is the way I would like to keep the cables.
Bios in the Default settings, with the exception of USB mouse and keyboard.
that means
SATA AHCI Mode Disabled
SATA Port0-3 Native Mode Disabled
Onboard SATA/IDE Device Enabled
Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode IDE

The symptoms of the problem is:
drag and drop windows DVD writing ends in an "unexpected error"
Nero finishes total burns of no more than 100Mb "with errors" and craps out at 82% done writing on two tries on a 135Mb and 170Mb files.

We have determined that it's due to the IDE being attached to the gigabyte Sata controller.

Okay so, I mess with the Jmicron 1.17 drivers without the pre-install option... no changes.
I messed with the Gigabyte 3Mb 1.17 without pre-install(from europe AND Asia)...
And I mess with putting the HDD in the ICH8 IDE 0, and uninstalling the jmicron drivers.
Nothin. even messing with all four bios settings, in common sense combinations.

So screw it, I format and reinstall windows pressing f6, using the Jmicro 366 Raid driver, then the Jmicron 363 Raid driver, then the Gigabyte 1.17 pre-install driver, and then the Jmicron 366 ACHI driver (there are more, 360, 362 of each type, RAID and AHCI, but I believe 366 is the newest and the one I should use)

Each time when it's done doing it's clean install of windows with "pre-installed drivers", there is no RAID/SCSI controller in the Device manager...F6 pre-installation of drivers didn't DO anything! (( I was never asked to remove the floppy from the Drive, like I think I should have been. Also, I couldn't tell if I could load up more than 1 driver, doing both RAID and AHCI))
WHAT am I MISSING ??
And when it fails to work, I still go in and try to turn on AHCI and Raid...nothin

After this fails to work, running the jmicro or gigabyte 1.17 setup.exe puts in the driver, lets Device manager see the SATA RAID controller but all of these options has gotten me no closer to burning DVDs.

A little about the different BIOS settings:
-When AHCI mode is turned on, a special raid controller "press ctrl-g" screen comes up
and does a fine job of telling me I can't make a RAID with 1 HDD, and that the HDD is already set up as non-RAID. yeilding a never-ending reboot sequence until I turn AHCI off in the bios.
-I even tried running installation of Windows during this, the pre-installation of drivers would error, and the windows setup would not allow me to install windows in this configuration
-When SATA port0-3 Native mode is ever turned on, My Purple SATA and IDE devices dissappear, and when the HDD is plugged in to 0-3 it won't boot even to windows CD.
-Ctrl Mode RAID/IDE doesn't work either, when AHCI Mode is off, it is like being in IDE mode, as far as recognizing the DVD drive, other than a raid setup screen popping up.

So screw it, fresh install no drivers at all...No gigabyte, no Jmicron, and then f6 Jmicron Standard Dual IDE drivers and everything turned off in BIOS
and HDD on the Yellow ich8 sata slots...same situation, this time the Dvdrw is read as an IDE device, but it still cannot nero burn files without errors or fail at Drag and drop burning.

I am sitting at about 10 reinstalls for the day...I am burnt out.
Please help!

Doh, I was gonna try some of the things posted on that reply that was removed.

But first, can someone tell me if the pre-install of the Jmicron drivers actually worked?
I know this has nothing to do with this MB or the drivers.
Did the drivers actually get installed, and then the Raid Controller device was just not recognized by Windows or something like that?

Also I probably should put this in a different Forum,
but How can I effectively search through just "the official" ds3 forum... it's 80+ pages long. Since I cannot search among the messages... "search these messages" yields nothing when searching for the word "gigabyte". I really don't want to read 400/800 posts of overclocking problems/results on this mb. And even trying to switch the forum view doesn't work.
Advanced search always sticks you at Message 1.

I have the exact same problem, except that it used to work for a while.

I'm exactly following this :

1. don't use sata ahci or raid mode

It stopped working recently. Also, I read somewhere that not using the jmicron driver would not enable the drive to work as it should. My system doesn't feel stable at all. The system frequently

First things first tho -
You MUST use latest JMicron drivers 17.08.01 IF YOU USE THEM
You must set your drive at SATAII (On Seagate this means no jumper)
You MUST install intel chipset inf update software IMMEDIATELY after first O/S full boot, Nov 06 version 8.1.1.1010
You MUST use XP CD with SP2 embedded, preferably with all updates/fixes/patches slipstreamed into it with nlite.

Not using Jmicron RAID drivers
Set to SATAII *no jumper*
Ran the correct intel chipset inf
Have SP2 xp PRO, no slipstream... we'll be trying that this week

Because this setup resulted in nothing different, DVDrw hangs when burning

I'm still trying to finish my post (more to come)

As a general rule, to sleep soundly at night, you dont use both sides of the JM controller, even with their drivers. You either put your SATA HDD on there and buy SATA opticals for the intel SATA, or you put the IDE opticals on the JM and the SATA HDD on the Intel.

I have seen your posts on this subject on other forums. As near as I can tell, you have gone >2 weeks with a PC that doesnt work and have done more XP installs in a day than most do in a year. So let me give you some good advice.
Put the mobo on eflay for $80-$90
Buy the new DFI infinity 965P-S for $145
The Jmicron 368 controller on board the DFI is IDE ONLY.
THen you have 6 full SATA AHCI RAID hot swap NCQ ICH8R, and that wonderful fast as hell Intel Matrix Storage Manager/drivers.
And you have the Intel Matrix floppy maker for F6.
Badda Bing Badda Boom.
Done (And the DFI overclocks even a bit better than the Gigabyte)

Enough with this madness all over the internet forums about the non loadable non configurable JMicron - DFI combo. People should protest by breaking their 965P's in half and sending them to DFI in Taiwan covered in dog manure.

As from my posts in another forum, I have given up on the idea of saving the INTEL Sata slots for future updates. And have been keeping my DVDrw on a seperate controller.

I don't think I can easily change out the motherboard.
This isn't my computer, just one I peiced together for a friend, to show him that building one is easy and fun, and more for your money than buying a pre-fab system from the big companies. It's a computer that has been built for 3 weeks, and I have had in my house for 2, I think he wants his computer back DVDrw working or not (not comes with a grudge and several cursewords)
So I think I will try out a SATA dvdrw, God I hoe this works.

I just don't understand how so many people have gotten theirs working, whether right out of the box, or with help from the Forums.
And if this Motherboard has this kind of problem, how come it was one of the favorites when I was looking for computer parts?

I hope this is a mistype.
And that you meant to send the broken poo covered 965s back to Gigabyte, or Jmicron or and Intel.

meh, too time consuming..

bah humbug

Edited: 04/08/2007 at 03:53 PM by Bozo Galora

I wish you would stop doing that, you post potentially useful information, and then take it away. Cut and paste answers are still answers, and what is time consuming is going back and deleting your messages.

Even though I had read the Intel FAQ and the Gigabyte FAQ already (before you posted),
You still had left behind settings and file links to check up on
And even though I got my setup in the device manager/BIOS setup the way that was shown, and my computer still doesn't work,
Now no one else can use that post to potentially help them

Thanks for the help. Too bad I don't have a photographic memory.

Well, if you want to give him a working PC (DVD and all) I already said what to do. Run everything in IDE mode, only IDE opticals on green molex, no JMicron drivers ever.

First go in bios and set JM controller to DISABLED, then boot once into windows.
This will remove all JM stuff from Dev Man. Go in there and verify this.
Restart, hit delete
Set JM in bios to enabled again
Set JM in IDE mode
Set intel to native in bios
XP CD will now be able to use your burner on green molex with MS IDE drivers during setup.
Underclock your RAM (if its 800 do 533 or 667), JMicron uses PCIe bus, and it is not fixed.
Place all SATA HDD/opticals on Intel 0-1-2-3
IDE Burners only on green, jumpered master slave, master at end of cable, 80 conductor.
Put your XP CD SP2 in and set boot to CD first in bios.
Reboot to CD, click enter to boot from CD, allow CD to start, ignore F6.
Say you want to install XP, pick the partition your O/S is on, and after the 2 warning tell it to delete that partition. It will then format the partition and load XP.
Everything will then work with Intel and MS drivers.

You see there's that terrible monster known as WFP (Windows file protection) and when you load the JMicron drivers, it will never let them go. If you have 2 same JM SATA/RAID entries after repeated efforts and try to delete one or both, windows will just find them again and reload drivers. If you have more than one of any JM device, first your drives will disappear, then you wont even be able to load windows, you will be in a reboot loop, with the dead black screen after a quick upper screen BSOD so familiar to DS3 owners.

And I'm beginning to notice a pattern that the ones who successfully load both IDE and RAID JMicron in dev manager are using the ICH8R
http://preview.rpritchett.photosite.com...os/tn/8151781_1024.ts1170168018000.jpg

There are THOUSANDS of people going thru the same thing. Trust me.

I would really appreciate it if you could give me a screenshot of your Dev manager with IDE controllers and "scsi" devices showing.
I would also like to see a screenie from Nero info tool config tab, assuming you can see the burner.
And one more - the all programs/accessories/system tools/system info/HW IRQ's

You can upload them to www.tinypic.com, or www.imageshack.us

Edit: and as far as deleting my posts - it was taking too long. I do have a life. I dont want to stay here troubleshooting everyones install. If you want the post, TURN YOUR PM ON!!

Edit 2:
After the weekend, if I'm feeling spry, I might just slipstream the JM drivers onto my XP CD and throw another O/S install on another partition and see what happens, with the JM in AHCI mode.

Device Manager Screenshot without JMdrivers installed
Even without SCSI/RAID controllers drivers installed
This setup still leaves the DVDrw's unable to burn Error in windows drop and write and total failure
or more than about 75MB before this error in NERO
Nero Error when at 5% complete
This is the first time I have seen the cause of the error, previous times has required Ctrl-Alt-Del to end program

Nero detects the DVDrw
Something that doesn't happen with the RAID Controller and driver installed.

And here are the IRQs

*I got an error when installing the Intel chipset utility, before updating,
It was thanks to realtek audio I think. It was easy to fix thanks to a fix from Microsoft

Thanks to you I now know where to post pics for forums

However, I am gonna buy a SATA DVDrw and see if that works, if he gets his computer and it works, he will be less bummed.
If this doesn't work, back to a new Mobo

Well, I should give a little explanation here.

I have had all the DS3's - Rev 1.0 - 2.0 - 3.3 and the "G" rev 1.0. When I got my first vers 1.0, > six months ago, I tried and also failed to load the JM drivers correctly like everyone else. I spent an 8 hour day trying and trying. Now loading device drivers is not rocket science. It should be simple for even noob's, and a 2 minute proceedure for guys who build PC's all the time for years and years. So there is definitely something rotten here.
But I found out (in desperation) by just going IDE and IDE, everything works fine and up to speed. However one does feel cheated after spending $150 for a mobo and one cant use the most important features. Its kind of a ripoff

For example, there is an AHCI setting for Intel in bios, but there is no AHCI possible on an ICH8 chipset, Period. Maybe a bios trick can do it, but not as things stand at the present time.
http://forum.abit-usa.com/showthread.php?t=111663

Now, I dont let anything on a PC beat me, and I will keep investigating till I find out one way or another. But I just dont have the time to waste on this. I was actually very happy with the mobo since it is a good overclocker. But over time I have noticed hundreds and hundreds of posts on this everywhere and its finally made me NOT like the board anymore..

Now getting back to your specific case, you do have IDE/IDE configured correctly in dev man (no JM). FWIW, I have figured out what the IDE controllers 2820 and 2825 Intel devices are - one is a 2 port and the other is a 4 port bus device. The 4 port is Intel SATA in native (4 separate SATA generic) and 2 port is SATA in IDE emulate - prim/sec, prim/sec.

Your error message is usually due to INCOMPATIBLE MEDIA (or a bad drive).
Buy some verbatim. The burner starts at the inner part of the disc and ramps up transfer as disc spiral diameter increases. So stopping at 75MB (8X on its way to 16X) means the burn strategy will not work with media/drive is bad/or you are in PIO mode.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/206389.
In any case, I think your new SATA burner will fix your probs.

You also gave me the wrong screenshot for Nero config tab. This is what I need........
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/2200/neroconfigao0.jpg
Look very carefully at this window.
See the master slave Primary with my two drives
Then also note the Secondary with nothing on it. This means the JM IDE chip is set up for TWO IDE channels (4 ports), but only one is used.- only one molex.
Note also the Intel (second group down) is also in Prim/Sec master slave (emulation) mode.
So I need that screenshot from you to see if DMA is on, and I also need info tool front page screenshot to see FIRMWARE version of your LG drive.

Heres a guy that claimed bad RAM was his prob
http://www.planetamd64.com/lofiversion/index.php/t26992.html
But this is with the P5BDeluxe with the ICH8R
And the MSI Neo guy says he loaded the JM drivers for IDE, but that board only has the 361 JM IDE chip.
Since the JM uses the PCIe bus, I have also wondered if upping the PCIe voltage would help. And the JM shares the same IRQ as Intel (16) I would be curious if maunually assigning IRQ's would help.

I hereby issue a challenge here to anyone who has successfully loaded both sides of JM controller (JM36x as both an IDE controller and a SCSI controller) on a DS3 ICH8 (no R) to post a screenshot.of dev man so showing.
You know, like the guys on AT staff that reviewed the mobo.

Edit:
See how much time this takes up?

This is the Correct Nero Screenshot
EDIT:
Opps I noticed that Listed in Nero I have 5 Secondary's and only 1 Primary, But you have 3 Primary's

And I am using Fujifilm DVD-Rs that have never given me problems with any of my other IDE ODDs. (remember I did test with my older BENQ ODD in this new computer too)
And on the first test through Nero, I used Verbatim DVD-RW.
And on this media was my first partially successful burn, still error'd at 82% of a 170MB file and finished but with errors on a folder with about 150MB worth of small files
Not exactly what you want to test with, but should be enough to determine that it shouldn't be the media.

The Three Primary IDEs Properties
Presented Left to Right, corresponds with Top to Bottom in Device Manager
They are indeed in DMA mode.

How important do you think your
"Underclock your RAM (if its 800 do 533 or 667)"
Step in the process is?
It's the only thing I didn't do in the last installation of windows that I did.

Hell, I'm almost ready to offer a reward for this

Edit:
-I know it's time consuming for you to post over and over again about the same problem, but if a problem this big had a couple of people asking the same Question and Several people like you who answer in clear responses with good links to information, and people stayed on topic. Then you could just link them to that topic, provided you didn't delete your response.
In this case the "official DS3 thread" is just too big 80+ pages and too much about Overclocking to be useful, especially since the "search these messages" is broken (for me anyway, I cannot even search this thread for the word Gigabyte and find anything)

FujiFilms had two sources - Japan and Taiwan
Japan manuf was actually Taiyo Yuden - the best, Taiwan was Ricoh if I remember right
There are no more "Fujifilm" Japan - stopped offering about 4 months ago, may still be a few on shelves.

And yeah, the AT search function has been dead meat for a ling time.

Um, I think I have found a solution to this JM thing
stay tuned

Well, how about that. I got it all figured out.
I'm even getting the removable hardware icon in the task tray (for hot swap) when I switched my HDD from Intel to JM.
And the two dif icons for IDE and SCSI is wrong, with current drivers. Theres only one dual controller entry. Plus the JM activated really slows XP boot.
Unfortunately I cracked one of the purple sockets while doing all the changing around. Damn IDE cable is right over them. Bleh.

I will start a whole new thread titled "JMIcron Problems - Solved!"
Then the 100,000 or so people who have crippled Gigabyte boards can all come here.

Edit #2
OOOPS!! (someone seems to have an even better config than me)
We now have a contender for the Oscar

Thank you very much. That was concise and easy to understand. I like a no nonsense type poster.
I just tried the 8.40 Alpha drivers to see if they would allow AHCI on Intel - no go - back to the shutdown - quick bluescreen - reboot loop. AHCI in bios does get rid of 2 pair of prim/sec IDE. But I still dont have the JM IDE contoller showing in IDE.

However, I have the single JM controller working fine - the burners test and transfer well, and when I put the SATA HDD on the JM purple in AHCI I get the hot plug icon and when it boots I get both burners in green and the HDD in blue in the DMI boot screen.
Changing to RAID, I can then do the cntrl G thing to bring up the RAID setup menu.

Just a teensy little more help here........
I have the 3.3 and F10, you have the V 1.0 - so 4 more questions:
a.) What bios are you running?
b.) When you put the SATA HDD back on Intel, I assume you went from disabled to.Native mode - correct?
c.) The 64 clock thing instead of 32 - for what?
d.) You say "lock" the PCI at 100 - you mean non auto manual set at 100 - correct? I have read that the PCIe bus "scales" with overclock in auto mode.
And there is no "lock" for PCI @33 that I can see.

My solution was more complicated using nlite, and I will post tonight on AT my full regime, but I still want to try a few things to see if I can get that 36x IDE.

Thanx again in advance of you next reply, and note that prob thousands of people will access this when it gets around.

a. F10
b. No bios changes made.
c. Not sure why. Was written down some time ago, as a "better than default" bios setting, maybe related to the amount of video card memory (?)
d. Some bios settings can only be seen by hitting Ctrl-F1. Try that...

Note: not all SATA HD's are capable of "AHCI mode" (AHCI = NCQ, in the HD spec. listings).
For example: my raided 7200.3 SATA HD's are not AHCI capable, AFAIK.
