Problem with my Linksys BEFW11S4 and DSL connection (PPPoE)

For the past couple of weeks I have been having problems with my DSL connection when I am using a router. The connection works fine if I just connect the modem to my computer. The connection is very unstable, my downloads tend to freeze midway, images will sometimes load half or a quarter and stop loading, and can never stay signed on to aim. The only way these problems will go away with the router is if I enable DMZ on a computer. the problem with this is that I have 3 computers on my network and I would like the internet to work properly on all 3 computers, not just one. Has anyone encountered any problems like this? If so, is there any solution? I;ve heard that linksys routers have problems with PPPoE connections, is this true? If so, whats a good router that will work well with PPPoE internet connections?

Are you upgraded the router to use the latest firmware? Also, are you running any firewall software on the PC's (excluding Windows Firewall on any XP systems)?

I have the latest firmware, and I also have a Sygate firewall (Windows firewall disabled), but even when closing it the problems still occurs.

Instead of enabling DMZ, try disconnecting all but one of the computers from the router and see if the problem persists. If it goes away, join the other computers one by one. One of your computers may be flooding the bandwidth of your connection.

Who provides your DSL service?

Perhaps the issue is on their end?

Good luck.

Hmm if there is a problem with PPPOE why should the DMZ help?

Assuming that your PPPOE is correctly configured (and the PPPOE software is disabled on the computers).

Try first to optimize the TCP/IP Stack to PPPOE, if it does not help.

If the Linksys has an MTU entry make sure that it is correctly set to PPPOE as well as the ID and Password.

In DOS box use the command: ping -l 1464 -f www.dslreports.com (after the command ping it is dash small L).

Broadband connection is conditioned for MTU 1500, you start with 1464 since ping does not use the 28Byte header + 8bytes for the pppoe.

Do this few times reducing the MTU number by 10 (1464, 1454, 1444).

If none of this works well contact your ISP.

thx for all the replies, esp. MrChad.

I tried connecting one computer at the time to the router and found out that my parents computer was causing the problem. I dont ever check their computer much because its old and they don't do much on it. BIG MISTAKE. I knew something was wrong by just looking at the little network icon in the systray because it was always busy even when the comp wasnt doing anything. The computer has a firewall but no antivirus, so I installed one and ran it and it found 800+ infected files. There were so many that the antivirus program crashed when it was trying to clean all the files Right now the network adapter is disabled and I'm gonna reformat it and put antivirus and a much better firewall on it from the start so I wont have this problem again. Thks for the help, u guys are much better than verizon and Linksys tech support
