Problem with neighbor's dog barking

So I have a neighbor whose dog barks. It happens in the morning about an hour before I need to get up. The problem is that the dog barks on and off for approx. 20 min before they let it in. At this point there is no way I'm going back to sleep.

I've talked to them once about it, things were good for about a week. Then things started up again last week and this week. Last week I figured that maybe they were having a couple of "off" days and I let it slide. However when it continued into this week, it became a problem.
I went to talk to him again tonite and he pretty much closed the door in my face. I figure I'll try one more time to talk to him.

My whole point is I don't mind the dog barking throughout the day or even in the evening, just not in the early morning when I'm sleeping. I have other neighbors who have dogs and they are good about letting them dog in right away when it begins barking. Either that or they walk the dog. I love dogs, grew up with them and would like to have one. I don't get one though, cause i know I don't have the time to take care of it.

Worst comes worst I guess I'll file a complaint with the city, which I would rather not do. I was hoping someone might have some suggestions.

Earplugs?
I dunno, if you've already talked to them and they won't listen then you may just have to file a complaint.

Bullets shut dogs up real fast.

kidding.

I really don't know what to do, other than starting the calls to the city or hoa or someone.

Well you could scatter pepper all over their yard.

Or you could read the other 200 threads we have on this issue.

My vote it pepper.

What time do you get up? My morning on a workday is about 8:30 but many consider morning to be around 6:30~7AM.

My city says noise is ok after 7AM

I have a similar problem with my neighbor's dogs as well. Once one starts barking all others will follow suit. I am sure other neighbors are bothered by the noise as well but nobody made a complaint or even talked to them. I finally had had enough and filed a complaint online to animal control center...that quiets them down real quick

you could try to figure out what the dog's barking at, then see if you can do anything about it...so, like, if he's barking at another neighbor's dog who goes in/out through a door or something a lot, you could ask that neighbor to keep their dog in until whenever you get up.

Lately our little one has been having a problem with barking. He barks when we leave, when we get home and now at about 7:15am (which I think is when the downstairs neighbor wakes up). I really debated the bark collar for about a year, but I finally gave in. Actually, I'm kind of glad, because now whenever I put that on him, he knows there is no barking. He's only been shocked once on medium. Some may consider this inhumane, but consider that we live in San Francisco where we have like neighbors that can hear him.

I was in the same situation the OP was in, also confronted my neighbor. They were really nice about it, but like OP the dog started back up in about a week. I went over a 2nd time and had a long conversation w/neighbor. It worked out good in my case, basically I told my neighbor in the nicest way possible, that it's nothing personal, but the barking dog is just 'unacceptable', I also made it clear that I will be coming over to voice my complaint 'every' time for now on - they got rid of the dog

My advice: Your neighbor probably knows their dog is a pain-in-the ass and it sounds like it's easier for them to ignore you than to deal with the problem at hand. Persistence is the key here, and also respect, be a thorn in his/her side for as long as possible and do it nicely - There's a good chance they will get so sick of you that they will prefer to quiet the dog than to see your face at their door once again.

If this doesn't work, type up a letter explaining that you tried to deal with this x number of times in a respectable manner like an adult, and that unfortunately you'll have to get a third party (animal control, city, police, other neighbors w/petition, etc.) involved if they can't be responsible dog owners. Then follow through. Good luck man, a non-stop barking dog is one of the most annoying things that can enter human ears.

If the person refuses to do anything about it when you asked nicely, then you have no choice but to report it to the local police. Places have noise ordinances and dog barking ordinances for a reason. If he won't fix the problem because it's the right thing to do, then maybe he'll do it because it saves him from big fines.

But once you report it you need to keep on it and every time after that you need to report it right away so they then have a record and things to go on for follow up.

What are the terms of the noise ordinance in your city? It could be well within the neighbors right to have an annoying barking dog after a certain time. It is certainly an a-hole thing to do as a neighbor

checked, there seems to be no times listed. simply that if someone complains, they will be warned and then fined.

Why don't you suck it up, most people with real jobs don't get to sleep in like you.

So you filed a complaint BEFORE you went to talk to him? Isnt that jumping the gun a little bit and going around common courtesy?

My neighbor got upset about my dog barking. He barked ~30-50 barks a day. I had a collar that counted. I called the city and asked what the ordinance was and they said the dog has be barking continuously for 20 minutes as they observe. And if the dog does bark for 20 min then try to find out what he was barking at. Apparently its ok for dogs to bark at other dogs/birds etc... If there is a reason, it is ok. Random barking for no reason for 20 min straight is a citation.

That seems pretty lenient and there is no way my dog would meet any of the conditions for citation but I did get a bark collar to be a good neighbor.

I have an annoying pair of dogs across the street that live in a fenced-in side and back yard. Just standing on my sidewalk or my porch is enough to get them barking their heads off and I'm about 80 feet away. It would be one thing if they barked when I came onto their property but this is MY property!
